Before you read the following post, I have to apologize for my absolutely abominable iPhone pictures. Here's the deal, folks, I am not a good enough mom to carry my camera. I can admit that. I have three kids and two hands, and one of them is not getting a Kodak, because that leaves me even MORE outnumbered than I was to start with.

I'm pretty sure the only nice pictures we have of our kids since my second child was born are from my awesome friends who do carry their cameras, and from professional photographers (love you guys!). However! That being said, please always multiply the "cool factor" of anything I've photographed by about 5. Thanks. Also, thank you to the very nice people who let me take their pictures at these events and are not at all creeped out by the lady with a cell phone and a media pass. I think it's the business cards. As I've mentioned several times, I am a native Prince Williamite. That's a technical term, which you'd know if you were also born and raised in the P-W-C. Not everyone can be this complacent in one place for so long, so if you didn't know, now you do ;)

Another thing you'd know if you were a true local, is that we don't like being looked down on by people from Fairfax who think they're cooler than us just because they've got carousels at their fancy pants playgrounds, and Wegmans and Trader Joes and P.F. Changs and play areas in their malls. Also, they've got Ann Taylor and Banana Republic. Listen, outlet shopping is just smart. So, there. Plus, we have a 24-hour Walmart. What's up, Fairfax?

As such, I have immensely enjoyed watching our county change over the last decade. I love that you can still find farms, but I also love checking things off the list of reasons people from Fairfax refuse to admit that PWC is a viable place to live or raise kids.

Most recently, Potomac Mills has checked a few items off my list, adding a "Fashion District" with places like Banana Republic, Victoria's Secret, J.Crew, and Abercrombie and Fitch. If I wasn't on a stay-at-home mommy budget....

They also added an indoor play area at the "Grand Court", which is at the beginning of the "Fashion District" section! Hahaha Fairfax! Plus, ours is educational! We were able to go join the Potomac Mills Kidgits for the grand opening celebration of the new play area, which featured a concert from Rocknoceros, cupcakes, and 300some of your closest friends! I love a great kid friendly event that's local Prince William County!!

Oh, hello everyone cool! How nice that we can all hang out at the mall together! Kidgits is a great way to get out of the house and enjoy free entertainment. Join the Kidgits club for some great extra perks! It's only $5 and your child gets special treats at Kidgits meetings, a shirt, and spins on the prize wheel every time you shop!

When you're a big brother and home schooled, you sometimes have to hang out at little kid events. Cupcakes and a hat help you to up your "cool" factor.

I love that there is a small tucked away section with games perfect for toddlers to play with. It's nice when someone thinks of details like that!

The theme of the play area is Virgina- so there are several historical landmarks shown, as well as the "landscape" on the floor featuring labels of prominent water features.

Here's a view from outside the play area coming in. To the right, there are benches that wrap around for parents, caregivers, or kids in time out. Under the benches are shoe cubbies. You know, for shoes that are in time out.

The state bird, a cardinal, makes an appearance, as do natural resources like the blue crab. The tree slide, in the picture above, is George Washington's Cherry Tree.

For parking purposes, the TJ Maxx entrance is a good idea :)

On my way to work yesterday, the D.J. announced the weather closure for Fauquier County Public Schools, and I looked at the sky wondering if I’d missed something. Nine hours later, pulling out of the parking lot at 5PM, large but insubstantial flakes fell on my car windshield. It must have been kind of cool for the kids and teachers in Fauquier to get a veritable free day, but I’m sure the parents were less thrilled.

What’s going on folks? Isn’t it supposed to snow? This weekend, they predict a low of 15 degrees, but every time a front comes through – something that’s dumped down a whopper in Washington state or a doozy in Denver, the temperature in Virginia rises from the teens to something awful like 34 or 38, where it hovers just above “colder than crap” but too warm for snow. We haven’t even had a respectable icing this winter. You know, that dazzling ice that blinds you the next morning as the weak sunlight shines on it … the frozen layer that encases the branches on your prize dogwood … a good, old heavy coating that threatens to break limbs of all kinds and wreak general havoc on Dominion Electric.

For us teachers, snow days mean hunkering down under the covers for an extra hour or two of sleep, then meandering – lazily – out to the kitchen to make coffee while our progeny poke around in the video cabinet to watch their second Disney DVD of the day. Snow days mean sitting on the sofa, holding a steaming cup of coffee in our hands flipping through the pages of a book or newspaper for all of ten minutes or until the youngest can take no more ribbing from the oldest and dissolves into a high pitched whine that lasts until nap time, which we push up from 2:30 to 1:00.

Snow days mean the older kids are in and outdoors, along with our expensive heat, oil purchased for $4.00 a gallon at $600.00 a bill. With them forms a trail of water from boots that weren’t removed in the mud room but are instead discovered on the only “good” rug we have in the house.

Snow days mean we’re already wondering at 1:00 if we’ll get the next day off too, or whether or not – after one day’s reprieve from the regular grind – we’ll be back in our routine, shoveling out the mini-van and shuttling the kids and ourselves back to school.

I remember snow days pre- kids. My husband and I used to loll around the house clad in the same pair of pajamas for as many days as the white stuff fell from the sky. We live on a quiet, dead-end street, and it’s easy to forget about the outside world when it snows and the road outside goes unplowed. He’d overdose on ESPN and I’d read books until I fell into a literary dither.

Snow days pre-kids, we’d make stacks of pancakes and a pound of bacon, which warded off hunger until 4:00 or so when we’d eat junk food and watch Oprah, and two hours later, pull some processed food out of the freezer for dinner.

Once, pre-kids when we were able to confirm that school was closed for the remainder of the week, we headed to the ski slopes with other teacher friends, and nothing felt better than the sun shining down on my face that “free day” snatched from the jaws of January’s doldrums.

Snow days with kids are a different story. When ours were babies and toddlers, we’d enjoy pajama wearing and family time, but if I’m honest (and by this time reading my blog, you know I will be), sometime around noon and the day’s thirtieth block tower, the shine wore off, and – having been awake for six hours – I’d start to fall asleep on the toy room floor, my drool mixing with theirs.

Now that the kids are older, we are again able to sleep in because they can climb counters, pour themselves cereal, and operate simple, non-life threatening electronics.

But after the second movie and tenth board game – with eight hours stretching ahead of you like an open field of untouched snow – you begin to hope that the stinkin’ white stuff will stop and the blasted schools will clear those parking lots.

At 3:00PM, you consider calling your building principal and asking to shovel the lot yourself – anything that will get you out of the house and away from the hours of sibling bickering. At this point, you start to understand the plight of Washington, D.C.’s working drones who – at first sight of a snowflake (and in Fauquier County’s case, at first hear) have to scurry around for childcare on these days – or take leave when the day turns out to warrant a vacation rather than resemble one.

Yes, we’ve missed another chance at a snow day in Prince William. And today, while the sun shines brilliantly, I wonder if this winter’s snow will ever fall._________________________________________________________________________________

Lowe's Build and Grow

I swore up one side and down the other that I'd done a review of Lowe's Build and Grow Events. I couldn't find it though. I even went digging through my personal blog (aka- the one that nobody reads) thinking maybe I'd put it there for some reason. I have now decided that blogger ate the post. It couldn't possibly be that I made up the fact that I wrote it.

Not possible. I'm far too organized for that.

(For those of you who know me in real life, stop laughing- I can hear you!)

So. Build and Grow Clinics. They're free. They're fun. You get goggles like Bill Nye the Science Guy!

One downside, these suckers fill up quickly! Right now we have them on the calendar for next weekend, February 25th, and March 10th. All you have to do is go to the Build and Grow Website, though, to reserve your space.

Included in the "not price", your child gets an apron to collect their patches (there's one for each activity), a certificate of completion, and goggles. All the supplies are provided, including hammers. The Lowes in Woodbridge puts out several long tables covered with plywood and lines the kiddos up at the back of the store right in front of the bathroom fixtures. It gets a little loud, but it's work at your own pace and the kids really love it. Lowe's workshops can vary slightly in spacing, but they're always Saturday at 10am, and are roughly every 2-3 weeks.

Home Depot also has kids build ing workshops. They're the first Saturday of the month from 9am-12pm, and are drop-in until supplies run out. Kids get to keep their craft and get an apron, pin, and certificate. Home depot clinics are also free, but do not require advanced registration.

Snow and Story- Prince William Ice Center

Snow and Story was great fun! $6 per preschooler. They spent about 45 min playing with a ton of toys, tricycles, dump trucks, giant plastic bowling set, pile of snow that was dumped from the ice resurfacer at the start, with shovels and rakes (and the dump truck toys). There were just the right amount of little people, not so many that there were fights over toys, not so few that baby cliques started up. Since dear daughter was along for the trip, and even though the ice was not slick, I did worry about tripping over my baby belly, so I let dear daughter play the role of escort for dear son.

After that, they already had the cafe set up with little place settings of 2 chocolate chip cookies on a napkin, and cups of hot cocoa, just the right temp for teeny tongues. My dear boy showed his sweetness by offering his sissy one of his cookies, I was so proud!!! At that point, she left to go to the other side to get ready for her skating, and we listened to two stories...Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and the Very Busy Spider. It finished up about 2 min after 11. Most of the little folks looked pretty tired after (mine laid down on the bleachers and watched Netflix quietly, which is most unlike him, for the first hour of the open skate).

Pediatricians in Prince William County

Finding a good doctor is way more complicated than it should be!! I always have trouble finding a doctor that makes me feel comfortable with my parenting decisions (I actually had one yell at me about giving my daughter soy milk because she breaks out in a rash when given cows milk!) or that seems competent (another one kept demanding I feel the same milk-allergic child "cream, butter, and cheese" to "fatten her up". Um....no?) or that has an office staff that's pleasant to deal with!!

Some of our moms, however, seem to have great luck finding doctors!! Here's what our readers recommend in terms of Prince William County kid friendly, mom happy Pediatricians! While the responses were overwhelmingly in favor of ALL Pediatrics, we promise this wasn't a paid ad for them!!

Another vote here for ALL Pediatrics - their Lake Ridge office is practically across the street from our house, so they get top marks for convenience :) We usually see whoever is available, and I've been happy with everyone we've seen so far in the 3 years we've been going there...

ALL Pediatrics is who we use (for 11 years now). Only thing is to schedule a "wellness" visit takes 2-3 months. And then they couldn't schedule my two boys together - plus I need to take them to the Alexandria office. But up until this point we've been very happy with them. Dr. Kaplan is great!
All Pediatrics....for almost 10 years! Lakeridge and now a newer office in Lorton. Alexandria office just too far away. I heard they now have a block of time set aside for walk-ins.
We switched to ALL Peds and LOVE it!!!!

NOVA Pediatrics
I actually go to NOVA Pediatrics. Not my fave.
I actually like NoVA pediatrics. I have twins and they have taken good care of them. I especially like Ginger Bietrich. The nurses are wonderful, especially Amber and Dawn.
I go to NOVA and really like them. You can always talk to a nurse if you need advice, and everyone is really nice. They can always squeeze us in in an emergency. I am not fond of 2 of the dr's, but the good news is there are lots that I do like (and I second Michelle's recommendation of Ginger Beecher. She's awesome!)
I love NOVA peds - Just not Dr. Seidman (one of the partners) Dr. Hamilton does all of our well baby/physicals and we LOVE the Nurse practioner Ginger Beecher for our two with - Ezcema, Asthma and allergies! Also Dr. Rodgers and Dr. Meyers. Very down to earth, do not push drugs,antibiotic or meds if not neccessary. I have four kid 7, 4, 4, and 3. We switched from Woodbridge Peds when my oldest was two and a Dr [performed a procedure without explaining]
I DESPISE NOVA Pediatrics. They take FOREVER to get you in a room and to see the dr. It also just has such an old and outdated feel. We switched to ALL Peds and LOVE it!!!!

The Pediatric Group

We've gone to The Pediatric Group for almost 21 years now ~ I have to tell you ... the doctors and nurse practitioners are great, but the front desk staff is not very friendly at all.

"We use The Pediatric Group - Lake Ridge. I like all of their docs except Dr. Tham, I ask to see anyone but her. The front desk staff is generally okay, but don't be late for your appt. or they do tend to get grouchy."

We also use Woodbridge Peds. I know they do work with parents on the vaccination sched, but I don't have any exp with that - we just vaccinated our kids when the doctors said we needed to. One thing I really like about the prac is one side is for sick kids, and the other side is for well kids.

Review: Azuria Events

Have you ever made the joke about the queen coming to tea? Well, for my daughter's 4th birthday, we actually had the Princess! (Didn't know a kid-friendly princess lived within commuting distance of Prince William County, did ya?)

Jennifer Faulconer, aka Princess Genevieve is the ultimate in a character study. When I first contacted her about doing my daughter's birthday party, she actually responded to me "Dear Queen Kristina". No joke. She does the Disney Princess giggle, comes dressed in a ball gown, and has an entire kingdom, complete with a map, a flag, and a crest.

One of my friends, a former servicewoman who shall remain nameless, couldn't handle the girly-ness of it all.

However, our girls...well, they were, to use Princess Genevieve's word, enchanted.

When I told my daughter that a princess was coming to her birthday party, she spent the entire week talking to anyone that would listen about the fact that "There is a REAL princess coming to my birthday!! A REAL PRINCESS!!". People in the grocery store, the post office line, and the library quiet room were all very understanding. Savannah (my daughter) was so excited that when Princess Genevieve actually knocked on the door and arrived, she rushed to the door with all of her friends and, and...

And she couldn't speak. Couldn't even quite look the lovely vision in blue in the eye. Actually, none of them could!

Princess Genevieve, however, took this all quite in stride, and floated in (she actually really did float! Pageant girls take note!) with her bag full of treasures from Azuria and proceeded to captivate an audience of 8 completely silent 3 and 4 year old girls (and one very talkative 5 year old brother) with her stories about unicorns, four leaf clovers, fairies, and mermaids. Mysteriously, the two older boys in the room disappeared to the basement to complete some Lego work ;)

By the time Genevieve finished telling her stories and inspecting the treasures that said brother brought down, it was time for some dancing and singing!

I would imagine that the Pied Piper couldn't possibly have gotten a more instantaneous reaction when asking children to rise. The girls all stood up and started slowly moving to "Happy Birthday Princess". Slowly, one by one, they got comfortable as Princess Genevieve twirled them around the room, and by the end of another song, they were all dancing in a circle to Genevieve's directions.

After that, Princess Genevieve helped with the singing of Happy Birthday and the cake cutting, and without missing a beat, placed herself on the floor among the happiest little girls I have ever seen in my life to talk with them while they enjoyed their refreshments. Kind, happy, and amazingly understanding of the preschool dialect of English that usually only mothers are fluent in, Princess Genevieve talked with the girls while they munched happily and asked her questions. She even encouraged them to say "please" and "thank you", which instantly won her brownie points with me!

When it was time to go, Princess Genevieve floated out the door with hugs and stories about the ball that she had to prepare for. It was lovely and etherial and magical.

And then the girls realized what just happened and went absolutely nuts talking to each other about what they'd just witnessed.

Savannah is now back to talking to anyone that will listen to her, or that is within ear-shot and HAS to listen to her about the fact that Princess Genevieve came to her birthday party. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I'm glad to know that I could give her such an amazing childhood memory. We get so few, when you think about it.

Princess Genevieve and her band of princesses are based out of Azuria, which, for commuting purposes is about the same distance as Warrenton. They will travel the region for a fee based on mileage. In addition to parties, Princess Genevieve is available for events and even Girl Scout badges! She will also do appearances for schools and libraries. With children my daughter's age, we opted to do a 45 minute appearance. I think that the optimal age for children to really get into the appearance would be 5-7, based on the 5 year old boy we had kicking around (who loved the story telling), and the 5 year old girl (who was the first one to stop being completely spell-bound and participate). However, I think that our 3's and 4's did fantastic and had such a memorable time, I would definitely have done this again the same way!

Featured Organization Friday: Amazima Ministries

In a conscious effort to use my "blogging powers" for good, I'm going to be featuring a new charity or non profit organization each Friday. If you're interested, please email me, and we'll get you on the schedule. This isn't a way to separate you from your money, or to make you feel guilty or obligated, it's simply another way for me to disseminate information about great organizations.

I have a problem. You may have it, too, if you've lived in this area as long as I have. Being a Northern-Virginia native, I have the best friends in the entire world.

Until they leave me 2 years later.

You military people. You make me crazy!! The good news is, however, that the internet lets us keep in touch, and I have a free place to stay in 3/4 of the United States and a solid 1/3 of the world. Probably closer to 2/3 if you eliminate the hostile nations.

This is my amazing (Marine Corps) friend Lindsay:

During the last year, I've gotten to experience Lindsay's adoption experience as she shared with me the joys and frustrations of adopting her new son, Philip from Ethiopia. He joins Lindsay's two step children and her son Noah. He is, by far, the cutest child I've ever seen in my life. Ever.

Partially because her son is so incredibly adorable, partially because it's not fair that every kid in the world doesn't have someone to love them the way most of our kids are loved, and partially because she is CRAZY, Lindsay has joined with a fantastic group of women to help orphans overseas.

Check this group out- they look like a good time!

Now, a group of women helping kids is nothing crazy. This particular group, however, and I mean this in the nicest way humanly possible, is taking on the crazy task of helping by running 200 Miles.

Yeah, I said 200.

Lindsay and five friends are running the Palmetto200 relay race (covering over 200 miles) on April 13-14. Each runner will cover about 33 miles of the race from Cayce, SC (near Columbia) to James Island (just outside of historic Charleston). As part of the race, they are raising money for Amazima Ministries – a wonderful organization that works with orphaned children and the most vulnerable in Uganda by providing education, food, vocational outreach, discipleship and medical care.

The ladies' goal is to raise $2000 for their work, and they are seeking “sponsors” to help reach this goal.

Says Lindsay: "You can sponsor us by the mile, by the number of runners, or by any other amount you feel called to contribute. No amount is too small, and each dollar will go directly toward making a huge impact in the lives of the neediest in Uganda. If you are able to sponsor our team in any way, please send your check or money order directly to me so that I can collect all the money and send it in together. My address is: 254 Mimosa Drive, Sneads Ferry, NC 28460. Checks should be made out to Amazima Ministries International. All donations are tax-deductible, so write your email address on the check so that Amazima can email you a receipt."

In addition to knowing one of the women in this group, I was particularly excited to start with this cause, because there is really nothing more inspiring to me than a group of moms working towards a goal. Except maybe a group of moms working toward a goal that involves them running 33 miles. Kid Review: Big Miracle

Since my 8 year old, Riley, crushed his thumb and can't write his afternoon journal, he's opting to offer "something for mommy's website" that I'm taking dictation for. Daddy took them to see Big Miracle while I had a girls night last week, so that's the topic of choice. Hope you enjoy :)

Big Miracle is about 3 whales who are trapped in Alaska in the ice. They started to leave to migrate late, so they get trapped in the ice. A bunch of people are trying to keep the ice open. It all starts with a camera man who went to Alaska to tell People in America Who Aren't In Alaska about a Mexican Restaurant in Alaska (from PwcMom- we haven't covered redundancy yet). Then, the camera man has a little friend who is a kid. The kid likes the camera man. So, the camera man said he'd do a video of the kid's big brother doing some cool tricks and in the background, there are the whales. The whales are Fred, Wilma and Bam-Bam. Their names are from the Flintstones.

So, then the movie is all about people trying to save the whales. Their only hope is an icebreaker that's on the other side of Alaska, and they want to use a helicopter to get it to the right side. The ice breaker works by using air to exert force on the ice to break it up. (From PwcMom- yes, my kids actually say things like "exert force")

There is a scary part when Russia comes and they try to break a big piece of ice. It's really loud. Also, the baby whale dies and that's really sad. There are a couple of bad words, but they're words I knew from school. (From PwcMom- ha!) I still really loved this movie. I think people would like this movie. A lot of people really care about the environment, so they would like this movie, also people who helped clean up animals that were hurt in the oil spill, they would probably like this movie also, because they like to save animals. I think that's it.

(The 5 year old would like to add: It's a little scary when the ice breaker is pushing the block of ice, and it scared the whales so they went backwards and they couldn't get a breath. Whales are mammals so they can't not get a breath. That's scary. I didn't like it that the baby whale died, but sometimes that happens, you know? Also, you shouldn't try to run on the ice or get on whales like in the movie, because that's dangerous. Only moms or dads should probably climb on whales)

Big Miracle is rated PG, however according to my favorite family friendly movie review site- Plugged In- this fantastic and uplifting story has more than its fair share of curse words, so go with caution (or go with confidence knowing your kid "already knows them from school")

Spring Break Camps 2012

School breaks can be stressful! Parents that work need coverage, holidays need preparing for, families come to visit....stress!!

Now, I'm not saying I know from experience (but I'm not saying I don't know either), but having to leave twice a day to pick up your child from a camp (even if it's half day) can provide a much needed break from the house and anyone in it that's not normally there! Further, I promise that I won't tell anyone in your house who's not normally there that you CAN, in fact, drop your child off at art camp and come back if you'd like to tell them you have to stay.

This is not a place of judgement.

Edgemoor Art Studio

A hands-on half-day week-long camp for all budding artists! Children and teens will have fun, learn about art styles and techniques, and use multiple media as they draw, paint, print, and sculpt. Haymarket IcePlex:
Piedmont Skating School will offer spring break series from April 2nd-5th. Early registration (before March 23rd is $70, after March 23rd is $93) discount. Registration opens March 13th. Lessons include a skate rental and daily punch card for practice sessions. There is no pro-rating available. Classes begin at age 3 and go through age 16. (Bonus note- these classes are afternoon/evening, so if you are still doing work/daycare- you can still do spring break skating!)

Kids in Motion:
Ages 3-12, potty training not required. Morning (9:30-12:30) or Afternoon (12:30-3:30) sessions. $25 for one day one session, $20 for more than one day each session. Must pay in advance. Siblings get a $5 discount.

Lake Ridge Park

Kindergarten through 3rd graders to come out for a unique spring break camp. Participants will learn about magic and how to use ordinary materials they can find at home to perform the art of illusion. So it happened. One of my kids was caught cheating. Using a little “study aid-age” when he wasn’t supposed to be using nothin’ but his noggin. And I’m so embarrassed. Remember, I’m a Mom-Teacher. So whatever goes down in school hits me doubly hard.

Ah, the irony of life. Earlier that day at the teacher lunchtable, the same group of us who talked about overscheduled kids three weeks ago now shared our “first time” stories. First time we cheated on school assignments, that is.

“Our whole class cheated on a test in the sixth grade,” one of my friends said. “And I’m the one who ‘found’ the test and handed it to the others.”

Another teacher friend lamented, “I cheated for the first and last time in seventh grade. I wasn’t caught, but I felt too guilty to ever do it again.”

I piped in. “Yeah, me too. Seventh grade. Computer class. The teacher was out, we had a sub, and I hadn’t studied, so I slid the book out and copied down the answers. Thing is, next day, she gave us our tests back to work on them again and I felt so bad that I erased all of my answers and started over.”

Then I told them about the second time I cheated in school – in college, no less. Sadly, it too, was a computer class. “Introduction to Computers” was so easy the first few weeks that I thrilled in the “Easy A” I was sure to receive. We labeled parts of the computer on our first test: monitor, hard drive, keyboard. Three days after the drop date, the prof introduced the obsolete computer language, Fortran. He taught this archaic program language to the first three rows of students while the rest of us sat in the back and cracked jokes about the nerds up front. Individually, we struggled to survive. Ever the fiction writer, I devised stories I could tell the dean, but my best ones required a doctor’s note, which I was unwilling to forge. After deciding that an actual “unplanned” pregnancy was too drastic a measure to withdraw without penalty, I resorted to the recycle bin wedged between the computer lab entrance and the Coke machine. Although I was pretty sure the programs I found weren’t worth copying, I had absolutely nothing in my head to produce a substitute, so I plugged in someone else’s work and never questioned my grade: an angry, red F.

So most of us have done it. But like all of the mistakes we made when we were children, how do we — as parents — guide our kids through the bad choices and resulting remorse to the penultimate land of “I won’t do that again because it was wrong and it felt lousy”?

Like most Moms struggling with a new parenting problem, I called a friend and asked her opinion. She said, “Have him write a letter of apology to the teacher. He should say he’s sorry, what he did wrong, and what he should have done instead. He should also lose a privilege. Something big that he has to earn back as he wins back your trust.”

I agreed with her, had him write the letter. But the loss of privilege around here has lost its power. He’s so used to losing his treasures that it doesn’t impact him much anymore.

Another friend suggested that we focus on the value at hand and give him homework - in this case – to practice being honest. I really liked this idea and talked to him about it, but I’m not quite sure how to implement and monitor it. I’m thinking of devising an “Honesty Log” in which he summarizes and reflects upon moments in which he told the truth when he’d considered lying instead. His father and I could read and sign off on it like we do his Reading Log for school.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Or, I’ll embellish it, just a little, when I write so I have a more interesting story.

Plan Ahead for: Wegmans Kids in the Kitchen

I'm a little perturbed that I'm having to type this again!! I was all planned out for this week and did all my blog posts this weekend (at the very reasonable hour of 3am Sunday morning) and today when I went to publish, it appeared that blogger only cared to keep the tags, dates, and titles.

Well that's not helpful!

Clearly this is God telling me that he approves of my typical method of waiting until the last minute to do any/everything.

Anyhow, Wegmans.

Wegmans is not just a grocery store- it's a shopping experience. My Uncle The Doctor (have you ever heard the joke about the difference between God and a Doctor? It was written for him.) lives near the flagship Harris Teeter store in North Carolina, which he refers to as the "Taj Ma-Teeter". When my Uncle The Doctor came to visit near the end of my grandmother's life, he kept going on and on and on about how we don't know good shopping. Knowing that my fiesty grandmother would have approved if she could speak, I tossed my Uncle The Doctor into the car and hauled him to Wegmans.

He wasn't "wrong" you understand, but I may have been right about something in this one, isolated incident.

With some people, you have to learn to take the victories when you can get them.....even if they won't fully admit it.

Wegmans has two Prince William County locations, and they offer some great looking Kids Cook classes for ages 4 and up! Tickets are required and are $5 per child/adult pair with your Wegmans Club card or $10 without a card. Sign up at the Customer Service Desk.

People- those Wegmans Club Cards are free. Let's be logical and just sign up for one, shall we? If you feel the need to spend the extra $5 you can mail it to me.

It's been my experience that cooking with your kids is fantastic. It gets them to eat what they made (even if it's healthy!) and it ensures that they'll be able to survive outside of your home on more than easy mac and top ramen. However, I do so love the idea of cooking with my kids at Wegmans since that means my kitchen can stay clean....assuming it was clean when we left for Wegmans.

With Blue and Gold Dinner coming up for our Cub Scout Pack, we've all been in a frenzy to get a few things finished up for ranks! A recent discovery for me was the Manassas Park Community Center! I'm busily adding their spring events right now, but I love their extensive offerings for teens and tweens!

Teens ages 12-17 may participate for a drop in fee of $2, or may purchase a teen pass. Classes are subject to cancellation or change without notice. Cultural Arts Classes (Guitar, Photography, DJ) must be paid monthly, $25 per member, $30 non-member.

The other day, we had the opportunity to visit with someone from a different generation- an older, wiser, sort of a generation.

While watching my children read and color, she looked up at me and asked if my kids were going to remember my face.

Taken aback by the question, I set down my iPhone and asked her whatever in the world she meant.

Oh. Right.

"My granddaughter reads all these things on the interweb about raising kids, and she writes about her life on the computer for everyone to read, and she's on that i-thing you have, just like you, all the time. I just wonder if you're all raising your children from behind those things. Are you ever really present?"

Well.....shoot. That's a pretty good question.

I know that my kids are happier when my phone dies (thanks, Apple, for my junky battery life!) and that they identify their life events and accomplishments as important based on whether or not I put them on Facebook. But I've gained something from all this mom-technology, too, right?

I'm not so sure.

How do you balance your kids and your technology? Are you teaching a good computer/life balance? I don't think that I am, which is funny from someone who all but bans the television during the school week- but I think I forgot that anything with a plug can be an addiction.

Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic

Disney on Ice is headed our way, and I think this will be a very fun event for the whole family!! Unlike Princesses on Ice (which is also fantastic, but definitely girl-focused) Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic features favorite characters from all the Disney classics! Taking a look through their Facebook wall, my boys were excited to see the Army Men from Toy Story, but generally agreed that anyone not sparkly would do nicely to keep them excited!

I often wonder if kids in the age of "helicopter parents" feel like they're being followed by their own personal brand of paparazzi, so I loved the tongue in cheek name that photographer Tiffany Coles-Brown gave her business right from the start!

Tiffany came to work with my kids for a few minutes so I could see her in action, and she is fantastic with children. My kids even dragged the poor woman down into the creek behind our backyard for some action shots in the bamboo, and with the stamina and bravery of the coolest National Geographic photographer, she followed right along in stride.

That was really all I needed :) I think it's really important that children's photographers "get" kids! If they don't, it's going to be a long day with a lot of pictures of people rolling their eyes!!

Happy Birthday Gymboree Woodbridge!!

Seriously, is there anything better than wearing your kids OUT? Like, "s/he is actually going to take a NAP praise (insert deity of your choice here)!"

Okay, yes, there is. Because the Gymboree people, they're sneaky in a good way. Not only are they going to make sure your child needs a nap, they're going to make sure they're learning something, too. Ha! It's like Elmo, but better, because you don't have to have that "TV Guilt Complex", and they're tired at the end!

(This is Meshell, the owner of Gymboree Woodbridge. Have you ever seen someone who more obviously loves their job? She's so joyful and excited and the kids eat it up!!)

You might miss it if you're not thinking about it, but seriously- there's a lot of learning going on!! Songs tell children they're going "in" or "out", "up" or "down". They work on balance, agility, coordination, and teamwork. There's peer interaction and parent/child interaction. And, the world famous Gymboree bubbles. (These things are amazing. Go buy some.)

I am completely confident asserting that every child that came yesterday to our PWCMoms playtime had a fantastic time. Even the shy ones.

(BTW- Great to meet you guys!! I love having actual people to go with the names I see on the wall all the time!! Your kids are all adorable, too!! I was so impressed we didn't have even one temper tantrum! That's a small miracle in a group the size of ours!)

So here's the deal. You guys ask me all the time about indoor ideas for winter, and I really can't give you a better suggestion than Gymboree. It's warm and inviting, it's engaging and educational, and they've got classes in everything from play to music to art to sports to school skills (although you'd better get on the waiting list if you want into that one!). Your membership also gets you into open play times, which is a fantastic alternative to the park when it's cold outside.

It's safe (everything's matted and plush), it's clean (Mrs. Meshe was very sure we all sanitized our hands before going in, and clean socks on grown ups are required), and it's a great investment in your child's development and in your sanity, because hey, at least your getting out of the house once a week this winter!!

If you've got children in multiple age groups, be sure to ask about the Family Class, which allows you to bring everyone to one time and have a great time.

I want to wish a very happy birthday to Gymboree Woodbridge, which is obviously doing it right. It's a fun, safe place to take your little ones and have a fantastic time together. Great job, Gymboree!!

Friday night, my family was invited to come and check out the final dress rehersal for "Miss Electricity" at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton (close enough to Woodbridge/Lake Ridge "for government work" as it were). We had a fantastic time!

Miss Electricity is about a 5th grade girl named Violet who thinks she needs to break a world record to "be someone". The popular kids at her school reinforce this by calling her "cabbage" or "nobody", and even Violet passes this behavior on to her friend, Freddy, who she claims to be "just her assistant". That all changes, however, when Violet is struck (twice!) by lightening and gains "super powers", or does she?

There are some great themes in this play, including that you're good enough just the way that you are, that how you treat others matters (especially moms and assistants), and there are some fun educational tie-ins, to. Violet is getting ready to take a test on States and Capitals, and the show is peppered with them. One of the characters LOVES to spell things, and Freddy's interest in Greek Mythology makes a small showing, too. These could easily tie in with a unit study, or one of the themes of the play could be used for an anti-bullying or "free to be me" message. The director, Caren, has even put together a study guide that ties several of these themes together, which is available for students who come to see the show. Weekend performances run from now through February 25th, but weekday performances can be arranged for groups by calling the box office. All three of my kids greatly enjoyed the show (almost 4, 5.5 and 8) but I would say the target audience is really between 2nd and 6th graders.

A few notes of possible sensitive items to be aware of (as always, I over analyze here because I know we have some parents that are very sensitive to things some of us wouldn't ever consider). First, there is a scene where Violet talks to Athena. This could be considered praying, and if you are sensitive to those as a religious family, you'll want to be prepared for it. Additionally, there is some "thunder" used, and my youngest didn't enjoy it, but she didn't cry either. Second, there is some mild name-calling, but aside from someone being called a "cabbage" I doubt it's anything you've not heard said before on the playground, and it's all G-rated. Third, Violet is part of a single-parent family, and if you have recently made that transition, it might be good to know that up front. The topic isn't really explored, it just is, but I realize that transition can be difficult on children. Oh, there are these seats.

Now, we went on a closed dress-rehersal night, so there weren't many people there. However, just as a warning, the backs on the seats flip down!! I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys how fun they are to mess with! And kick over! And clap with!! Hooray!!

Just sayin. The chairs and I are not friends.

My kids universally said their favorite part was the dance to the "Party Rock" theme. Their second favorite was a brief appearance by Zeus who is "too busy listening to his iPod, texting a friend and eating a breakfast burrito" to help Violet. (Interestingly, it's the same actor who does both) The youngest liked Athena because she was pretty, the middle one "got" that Violet wanted to be important and famous, and the oldest "got" the message that she already was. They also all understood that Violet had been mean to her friend and should have acted nicer. We had a talk about that in the car on the way home, and about how she apologized for being wrong.

This is a fun play, and a great location to introduce your kids to the arts. No need to schlep all the way into DC :)

Additionally, keep your eyes out for other great performances from this group, who's got other plays such as Sinbad: The Untold Story, Rapunzel, Home (American Premiere) and Winnie the Pooh lined up for the rest of the year!!

Open Skate at Prince William Ice Center

On Saturday night, I took the kids to the Prince William Ice Center to bide my time as a football widow. (I was pulling for Tebow, but rooting for the Patriots)

I was a little nervous when I pulled up and couldn't find a parking space- but there were still a lot of skaters hanging around after the morning's exhibition activities. There was also a hockey game going on when we arrived (PW Ice Center has 2 sheets of ice).

Princess was supposed to start skating lessons on Tuesday morning, but I forgot and we missed the first day, which I'm adding to my mother of the year application! When your child enrolls in lessons, they're put in the computer to have one free practice a week while they're in lessons. It used to be you got a coupon book, which probably would have worked better for me since I promptly forgot about the fact that she was in the computer when I went to pay. I've seen some BOGO coupons lurking around, I want to say there's one in the Leisure magazine the park authority puts out, but I'm not sure. If you can find them, take them! We had 5 people skating plus 2 skate rentals, which ended up being $41.

Skate sessions last 2 hours for open skate. We decided to arrive halfway through, which is when they clear the ice to Zamboni it, which takes about 10 minutes, so I guess the sessions are really an hour and 50 minutes :)

A note here. PLEASE ask someone for help if you don't know how to put on ice skates! I pulled a few people off the ice to re-tie their skates. I used to help teach kids' classes when I was a figure skater, and it really makes a HUGE difference if your skates are tied properly. If you can wiggle around, slide your foot out, or fit your hand in your skate after you've tied it, "Ur doin it rong". Let the boots help you support your ankles!! Luckily for you guys, YouTube is here to rescue us!

Ah, that's better!! While I'm at it DON'T WALK ON THE BLEACHERS WITH YOUR ICE SKATES ON!! THE BLADES WILL GO DULL AND THE NEXT PERSON WON'T BE ABLE TO SKATE!! If you need to sit down, there are benches in the lobby. Sorry, it's kind of a pet peeve of mine. Skate blades are like your good metal knives- so don't use them on metal!

The music was embarrassing my 8 year old. It was mostly 90s instrumentals and they started with the first verse being sung, and then it was just music. Of course, this meant I needed to sing! Sorry, kids, you can tell your therapist about it later!

It is rather crowded on a Saturday night (did I mention that? I'm writing this in 5 minute chunks!) so make sure your child learns how to get up before you put them on the ice. A quick way to do this is put their skates on and have them fall down and get up several times in the lobby. On the ice there is an area with 4 cones where all the girls who think they're the next Tara Lipinski (or whoever is the new "it" skater) go to show off their moves. Keep your child away from that area, because it's the place they're most likely to get trampled by someone going backwards.

In terms of what to bring, snowsuits are a good idea on toddler skaters. Otherwise, long pants, long shirts, and a jacket along with GLOVES!! for everyone, and if you're being safe, a helmet is a good idea, especially for new skaters.

There is a cafe that serves snack foods and drinks. Outside food and drinks are not allowed according to the signs on the front doors. Cash and credit cards are accepted both at the front desk to buy passes and skate rentals and in the food bar and pro shop, which does have gloves if you forget!!

We had a really great time skating, and will definitely be back for more fun!! Little kids (ages 2-5) will probably only make it an hour or so their first time. Older kids, or those that have skated before, will enjoy the entire session, and your younger ones can always take a snack break.

Mission Sleep is a new non-profit organization that strives to provide free, overnight newborn care to military families where Dad is deployed or wounded when Mom has their baby. Mission Sleep will provide a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or Post-Partum Medical Technician to come into the home of a new mom and provide overnight care and education to that mother. This allows mother to transition from hospital to home and provide her relief in the early months home with baby.

Just kidding. I wouldn't have anything to claim I'm doing if I didn't have questions. Then I'd have to admit I really AM watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and not "doing laundry and blogging".

I would never live that down, y'all.

Okay, so, user question was something along the lines of "I'm looking for sports activities for my 3 year old"

You wanna nab an early sports scholarship for junior? Let's do this.

Gymboree (Happy Birthday to our Gymboree Woodbridge Friends!!) offers sports for ages 3-5, art for ages 18 months-5 years, music 6 months to 5 years, and play and learn from birth to 5 years. (Bonus- they've got scheduled indoor play times you can take advantage of!) Classes vary by location.

Haymarket Ice Plex offers Skating lessons for children as young as age 3. Hockey classes can be started after passing the first two levels of skating lessons so a child has a firm grasp of the fundamentals.

SoccerTots/Little Sluggers offers classes starting at age 18 months for soccer (which involve parents) through age 10. Locations are all over the NOVA area, including Haymarket. Baseball starts at age 2 and goes through age 5.

The Little Gym (in Gainesville) offers classes ranging from Parent/Child (4 months-3 years), Sports Skills (starting at age 3 through age 6, includes hockey, baseball, soccer, and more), gymnastics from ages 3-12, dance from ages 3-12, and karate from ages 4-12.

The Freedom Center in Manassas has "Little Hoops" basketball starting at age 2.5 and 3.5 year olds can try "Little Pucks" hockey. Pee Wee Football classes start at 3.5, as does T-ball. Parent/Child sport classes start at age 2, and Soccer and Sports Mix start at 3.5, with Tae Kwon Do starting at age 4.

Prince William County Park Authority offers swimming and gymnastics for toddlers, including "Parent/Child" classes that start at 6 months for swimming. Ballet begins at age 3 and gymnastics at 18 months. The Dale City Rec Center offers two courses of "Tiny Titans Tri-Athletes" classes for ages 2-5, and has both soccer and t-ball for ages 4 and up. Basketball through the Park Authority begins at 4, All Star Sports (a mix) is ages 3 and up, and Little Pros is 4 and up. For these courses, check out Our Leisure Magazine.

Gymnastics- most gyms offer classes for toddlers and up. Rates vary GREATLY based on the credentials of the instructor, and all I can say is that from a personal perspective, unless you 2 year old hops on the uneven bars and throws out a triple flip with a stuck dismount the first time they touch it, you do not need to be paying over $80 a month for gymnastics. If the first place you call gives you sticker shock, try again.

Prince William Ice Center starts their skaters at age 4.

Most Martial Arts studios that I've looked into seem to have a class for children as young as 3. I'm linking to this one but just because it's the one I found that actually listed their class ages. Call and check the studio nearest you. As with gymnastics, let me point out that if you're signing up a 2 or 3 year old, please do not let some push owner pressure you into a 1 year contract. Your kid is too young to know if they'll like mashed potatoes from one day to the next, a year is insane. Just throwing it out there.

Swim Kids starts em young, too, with classes for parents and children beginning at age 6 months.

When you grow up....

I think as moms we all spend time wondering what our children are going to be when they grow up. When my oldest was 15 months old (and already talking way more than was fair)- the best days of his life were Tuesday and Friday because that was when the trash truck came. "Twash!! Momma!! Momma! Da twash twuck is hewe!! Can we go see da twash twuck? I gonna wide da twash twuck one day!"

Fantastic. My progeny will be a master of waste management.

I don't consider myself a tiger mother, but I have my moments. When my second child became old enough to express interest in a profession, he adamantly proclaimed he was going to be a chef.

"That's great sweetheart, but you have to go to college, too", was my answer through bites of the surprisingly decent cookie he'd just created.

I try to remind myself that just because they want to do it when they're 4 doesn't mean they'll want to do it forever. In my elementary school yearbook, I declared in 5th Grade that I wanted to be a children's psychologist. In middle school I was going to be a professional figure skater/college professor. In high school I was going to work in International Relations for the UN. In college my major changed from Government to IR to French to Russian to Philosophy to Comparative Religion. I get that we all grow and change.

But, at the same time, when my daughter did this to my face the other day:

I couldn't help but think that she'll be doing makeup on Dupont Circle when she grows up.

Just a thought. (Oh- bonus! She did the hair, too!)

The Schools we received feedback on, in alphabetical order by name of school are:

ALPHA-BET COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL
Myself along with 3 other mommy friends cooperatively taught our children for their first year of preschool. After looking at some other preschools in the Manassas area, I decided that a cooperative preschool was the perfect fit for us. It allowed me to be in the classroom but gave her the formal classroom that she needed to get accustomed to. And we both love it.
As the children arrive the day starts manipulative time,circle time, center time, and the rest of the day flies by with bathroom break, snack and recess. The last 15 minutes are circle time again where the themes of the day are reinforced, calendar and weather are talked about. Class ends at 12:15.
My daughter has really taken to her teacher and the friends she's made in the class. She's eagerly awaiting the return to class tomorrow. The ideas presented in class really stick with her and she's constantly telling me what Ms Jo said. Even if it's something that I know was introduced to her last year by me. Don't know if that is because someone else is explaining it, she's a year older, or Ms. Jo is really that good. :) Also, my daughter is always excited when she knows that I will be in the classroom. I love that I get to see exactly what's going on in the classroom. I don't have to pull teeth to know how her day went (as I've heard other Mommies mention). Plus I feel like I'm holding onto her just a little bit longer. Now the logistics. This is the part that parents always worry about. How much commitment there is. Before school starts every parent that will volunteer in the classroom is subjected to a background test and must obtain a TB test. Only one parent is required, however both parents are given the opportunity to volunteer. A parent will typically have to volunteer 2, possibly 1, times a month. One of those times you will provide snack for your class. You must sign up for one parent "job". It can be as simple or involved as you wish. For example, organizing a family night, classroom parent, fundraiser coordinator, board president, etc. In addition, a parent must attend 6 pre-determined dates for setup/cleanup or training. For those of you with younger siblings, the school will assist you in pairing up with another parent to trade babysitting services while the other volunteers. And ensures that you will not volunteer on the same day. I have a 3 year old (not old enough for school) and have found it very easy to trade with another mother and he loves going with her. CHESTERBROOK ACADEMY
I recommend Chesterbrook Academy in Woodbridge. My daughter began at summer camp when she was 3. She had been home with me and it was a hard transition. They encouraged me to call and check on her the first week and even called me with updates. She attended two years of preschool. We have been very pleased with the progress she has made. They teach Spanish, sign language, computer skills and more. I feel that Chesterbrook has prepared her well for Kindergarten. I would recommend the school to everyone! (Click Here for Website)

CLOVERDALE PRESCHOOL (2 Reviews)

I love, love, love the 2 1/2 year old and 3 year old program offered by Cloverdale. The teachers are superb. They have a very real, effective way of interacting with the children, and to say they are gifted in teaching is an understatement. These ladies are the kind you want your children to have teaching them EVERY year because of their true interest in the kids. I can't say enough good things about these teachers. Besides their basic preschool classroom learning (language skills, art, counting, etc.), the kids also had music and P.E. My kids LOVED music day in the "Big Room". The staff I interacted with were pretty phenomenal as well. They always got me information I requested and were nice people to have around. Cloverdale has a great program going on, and it's quite affordable. I highly recommend it.

We absolutely love Cloverdale for many reasons, and have used it for both of our older children, our youngest will begin attending, too, in the fall. With programs beginning at 2 and a half years (Half days Tuesday and Thursday) ranging up to an outstanding Pre-K program, Cloverdale has a well-established program that focuses on literacy readiness, core competencies, and social skills. They offer German to the students in the 4 and 5 year old programs, which all of the kids seem to love. The teachers are all amazing and most of them (the exception being the teacher for the relatively new 2 year old program) have been at the school for many years which speaks to the happy, cohesive teaching team at this school. The teachers are as patient and understanding as they are qualified, and have the skills and calm, even tempers needed to help even the most clingy children adjust to being away from their primary caregiver while they learn to function in a school setting. Cloverdale also offers "Stay and Play" for $10, which allows students to remain until 2pm (the normal day is from 9-12) and has been a lifesaver for me on a few occasions where I was volunteering at the elementary school or had a doctor's appointment. Also, Cloverdale offers private K-3 grades if you are looking for a school where your child can stay for the early years of elementary school. DAYTIME PLAYTIME:
A shout out to Daytime Playtime in Haymarket too, they are awesome! We love their summer camp and they were a top contender when i was touring preschools. So much so that we have sent our son to their summer camp 2 years running! (Click Here for Website)
From the school: We are going to have open Houses on January 28 at 1pm and February 1st at 6pm. We will be opening registration for the 2012-2013 school year the first week of February.

EVERGREEN NURSERY SCHOOL (2 Reviews):

My children attended Evergreen. Without going into too much detail, the director is overbearing to work with and frequently told me that she knew my child better than I did. There was a great deal of drama and while she definitely seems skilled at what she does and is especially great and knowledgeable with children who have special needs, I'm not sure it was worth the difficulty dealing with her and her never ending string of issues.

My 3 year old son attends Evergreen Nursery. We started right when he turned 3 and have only been going for a few months, but it is a magical, magical place. Ms. Jody Boronkay is the director of the 12 child max school in the basement of her home (don't let that be a setback, I questioned it for a moment and it is more set up for child learning than many of the preschools we visited- and we visited A LOT). There is a 1:4 teacher:student and the focus is really on children getting excited about learning. When they learned about the rain forest she put a huge pool in the main classroom, hung vines all around, turned the thermostat up so it would be humid, and brought in animals found in the rain forest- FOR A WEEK! so the kids would get the full effect of the rain forest while learning. She also has a part of the program swimming lessons and ice skating lessons. They visit a pond weekly in the spring to watch the changes that happen. I could go on and on. A major selling point for us (as if that wasn't enough) is my son has a severe dairy allergy and has us worried being away from the protective world we are in and not having a full understanding of "safe" foods yet to protect himself. Ms Jody has taken extensive measures to guarantee his safety. She also has chilren with cerebral palsy and autism and the children flourish (dare you to find the child!) and so the children learn how to care and embrace and understand children of handicap. This school is a warm, exciting place that I wish I had as a child. I am feeling very limited in 2 paragraphs in the sharing of just how wonderful this school is. (Click Here for Website)

FREEDOM CENTER PRESCHOOL:

The Freedom Center preschool is small, really tiny, and that's its strength and its weakness. There is only one small classroom, so there are only 4 classes---3 am, 3 pm, 4am, 4pm. The same teachers teach all the children (the three year old teacher is the four year old PE teacher, the four year old teacher is the three year old PE teacher) and the aides work for all the classes. As a result, the children know their teachers very well and the teachers and aides know the children very well. There is a very warm, family atmosphere that makes even the shyest kids feel comfortable. Miss Phyllis, who is the director, is warm and accessible and laid back, and her attitude really permeates the whole program. The classroom is tiny, but the children leave at least once a day for PE elsewhere in the building and often times more frequently for activities. There is a big emphasis on physical education and the children are taken outside whenever weather permits (even on chilly days, they bundle up and go out). There is no pick-up/drop-off and the preschool room is in the very back of the large building. This means on rainy days, you have to hustle through a huge parking lot and then through the whole building. Pick-up/drop-off takes a lot longer here than I imagine it does at other schools. The curriculum is play-based and there is definitely a big difference between the 3 year old program (which has little academics and is more focused on teaching children what school is and how to be a student) and the 4 year old program (where there is a heavy emphasis on pre-reading skills). There are little to no worksheets and lots of hands-on activities. My son came into the program a bit wild and unfocused. He struggled a bit towards the end of the 3 year old year but has really excelled in the 4 year old program. I think the caring, relaxed atmosphere and the ton of physical activity provided have really helped him. (Click Here for Website)

GOOD SHEPHERD PRESCHOOL (3 Reviews):
Pros: low tuition, kind teachers, private classrooms, walk-in drop-off and pick-up. Cons: very little communication/organization from teachers or director, no outside play (even though there is a playground.)

I had such anxiety about sending my quite shy 3 year old to preschool last year but our experience at Good Shepherd had been so wonderful. The director is amazing and from the first moment, she made my daughter and I feel so welcome and reassured. It's not as "high-tech" as many parents would like, but the wonderful teachers and the caring and attention they provide the children (and the parents) cannot, in my opinion, be beat. There is a feeling of "family" at Good Shepherd. They pay close attention to the safety of the children and as a "worry wart" mom, that has helped ease much of my anxiety. I also like the smaller teacher to student ratio. This is our 2nd year there and my daughter attends the 5 day a.m. 4's program (they're teaching the Handwriting Without Tears program which I love) -- she is SO happy everyday I pick her up that it really does warm my heart! I KNOW she'll be ready to start kindergarten (both academically and socially) in the fall and I owe the majority of that knowledge to Good Shepherd. I really believe that the majority of parents who choose Good Shepherd are 100% satisfied with their decision.

The curriculum at Good Shepherd Preschool stresses all aspects of growth and development. They work on physical, social, and emotional development, as well as academic development. They believe that children learn through their senses, activity, curiosity, imitation, conversation, imagination, and widened experiences. Note from the School: Open House on Jan 30th. If parents have a child that will be 2 1/2 and potty trained by Sept or one that will be 3 by Sept, they can attend at 9:30 for a meeting, a tour, meet teachers, find out how to do the online registration etc. I will be answering lots of questions! They can bring children to this meeting. If they have a child that turns 4 or 5 by Sept, and are thinking about the 4's program or private Kindergarten- 10:30 is the time to show up for their meeting.Registration for new families is Feb 6 at 7 am, using our website.

KIDS IN MOTION PRESCHOOL:
My daughter attends kids n' motion twice a week. It is a great preschool and accepts children starting at 2 and 1/2 and they do not have to be potty trained! My daughter started at 2 and 1/2 and is 3 now. They do play, craft time, snack, read books, learn letters, etc. It is a really great program. LAKE RIDGE CREATIVE PRESCHOOL- 3 Reviews:

Love the Lake Ridge Creative Preschool, located on the corner of Old Bridge Road and Oakwood Dr. Explorers class for 3-4 year olds is Tuesday and Thursday, either 9:15 - 1:30 or 9:45 - 2:00. PreK for 4-5 year olds is M, W, F, same times. The curriculum is the perfect mix of fun and learning. The children do art projects, sing songs, do puzzles, learn to use the computer, go on field trips, learn Spanish, play outside daily, etc - it is amazing to me the creative ways they get the children engaged in learning. There is an after school reading program for children that show they are ready to begin reading independently, though learning the alphabet and writing skills are taught to all almost from day one! The preschool is open to everyone - non-Lake Ridge residents pay a bit more in tuition, though it is very reasonably priced - last year, Explorers were $120/month for residents, $130 for nonresidents, and PreK was $170/180. I follow your posts via Facebook and read that you were looking for preschool reviews. I saw you had a recommendation for Lake Ridge Creative already, but I decided to send in another one. The following is excerpted from a letter I wrote to the Lake Ridge Board of Directors a few months ago in support of the preschool program. My daughter attended for both preschool and pre-K, and I am very pleased with the school and highly recommend it to others.

When I was looking to choose a preschool for my daughter, my main focus was on the school's reputation and the quality of the program. I had narrowed it down to two schools - the LRPRA preschool and one other local preschool. LRPRA's preschool appeared to be more well-rounded in its activities and learning opportunities, and in preparation for kindergarten. What finally "sold" me was the fact that I heard nothing but good things about the program. My mother, who is a past LRPRA board president, told me that during her time on the board she received many positive reports from parents about the program. A friend who is an elementary school teacher said that the children coming from the LRPRA preschool were generally better prepared for entering the structured environment of elementary school and excelled in their academics. She said there was a notable difference between the LRPRA pre-school graduates and those of other preschools. Nothing beats positive word of mouth "advertising" and opinions from other parents, and to me this spoke volumes as to how good the school is.My daughter has thrived at the preschool, academically and socially. LITTLE LAMBS VILLAGE PRESCHOOL:

We enrolled our child at Little Lambs after researching a variety of preschools in the area and having several educational professionals recommend it for our child. They said its play-based, active learning approach with a staff who are supportive of children of differing backgrounds and abilities would be perfect for our child’s strengths and weaknesses. And they were right! Our child had a poor experience at a previous preschool and was quite leery about the whole school experience. He is a smart child who learned at a very young age how to tune out people who talk down to him. The staff at Little Lambs has been warm and welcoming to our child, taking him in and showering him with love to bring him out of his shell. He has changed from a sullen child who was unable to recite the alphabet to a bright and happy boy who can write his own name, finds letters in his world on a daily basis, and counts everything he can touch. He talks about his friends constantly, and participates in classroom activities with gusto. We can’t say enough positive things about our experience at Little Lambs. Other parents of children at the school talk about how it’s the hidden gem of preschools in Western Prince William County, and we wholeheartedly agree. OLD BRIDGE PRESCHOOL (2 Reviews):
Old Bridge Preschool, associated with Old Bridge Methodist Church, has been open for 4 years. Besides being a great preschool with very caring staff, the also have a mission of accepting students with special needs. They have special staff for students who qualify for services through the county, and although they aim for 30% special needs, they also do amazing things with typically developing children. Their academic program appropriately prepares students for kindergarten and helps them develop a love of learning. I have had a great experience with the school, with both of my children attending during the 4 years since the school has been open. I highly recommend Old Bridge Preschool.

Both of my kids have gone there and I can't say enough good things about the school and staff. We have loved every one of our teachers and both kids have learned so much through play that they didn't know they were in school. They also accept special needs children which really teaches the children compassion for others. (Click Here for Website)

PRINCE WILLIAM ACADEMY:
We had a horrible experience here and pulled our child out mid-year. The program sounds so great on paper, but the classrooms are dirty and the teachers over-stretched without aids. The preschoolers have indoor gym at the same time as older children and my child came home badly bruised one day when a 4th grader bowled them over and I didn't even recieve a note from the school or the teacher. RUSSELL ELEMENTARY (MCB QUANTICO) PRE-K PROGRAM:
My eldest has really enjoyed the 1/2 day, 5 day-a-week program for 4 year-olds offered by Russell Elementary School aboard MCB Quantico. Each of the two classrooms fits 16, and there are three teachers permanently assigned to each class. That makes for a great teacher:student ratio and provides ample attention to each student. There are "out of classroom" classes, including art, P.E., and computers. The class is run on a routine, and my eldest really gets into it. She especially enjoys the big and small group times, where she can choose from a variety of activities provided by the teachers. The school staff is a pleasant crew, and there are ample opportunities to volunteer in the classroom. This is a good first look at "real" school (e.g., all the fundraisers, PTA, expenses, etc.), and I've appreciated getting my feet wet slowly. Finally, there is a bus that picks up the kids. Only students from the same grade ride, and there is a teacher aboard the enter time to supervise seatbelting and that the proper adult is picking the students up. SEVEN OAKS ACADEMY:
My son goes there, and he loved it from day one. He is 4 and can already read a little bit. They actually teach them there, not just babysit them. The teachers are 'real' teachers, with degrees and certificates, and each class has it's own room with a door. This is all great to me because he used to go to (other school name deleted) which is crap compared to this place. He gets a newsletter sent home once a month with 'homework' and it tells the parents what they are working on, and helpful print outs to use at home, like sight words and refrigerator stories. The preschool is from 9-12:30am I believe, but my son does go full time from 9-5:30pm. But the actual 'school' part of the day mostly takes place in the morning before lunch. They offer full time and part time preschool (you can choose 5 days a week or 3 days a week, but they only offer morning preschool, not afternoon). They are affordable compared to other places, and offer morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack.. Their summer camp is GREAT, lots of field trips (about 2 times a week) and other fun activities for a reasonable summer fee. (Click Here for Website)

ST. MATTHEWS DAY SCHOOL (2 Reviews):
We love St. Matthews and feel like it is everything a preschool program should be. It is structured enough for the kids to feel secure, free enough for them to explore, and loving so they feel safe in their first school experience. We love that there is a carpool line because with a preschooler and a new baby this past year it was great not to have to get out of the car in the rain or snow with the baby! St. Matthew's was the only school we looked at because on our tour, our child walked right in and acted like they'd been in class there since day 1. It's been great and we're military so we're not sure when we'll have to leave, but we'd be very happy if our youngest child was able to go here, too.

Pros:Teachers seemed awesome and school seemed well-organized. Cons: No handwashing (just wipes), no snacktime at a table (they eat on the floor,) no walk-in drop-off or pick-up, open/mixed classrooms. (Click Here for Website)

ST. PAUL'S SCHOOL/MDO (3 Reviews):
Loved the mom's day out program at St. Paul's in Haymarket. The lead teacher there is amazingly loving and great with the kids!

We came to St Paul’s based solely on its reputation in the area. We were new to the area, and everyone told us it was “the best” academically and “guaranteed” placement in the Gifted program once the children moved to PW schools. As parents of extremely bright students, it seemed to be a great fit. Unfortunately, the school did not work well for our children at all. In fact, it was extremely detrimental to our children and we’ve spent the ensuing months trying to fix the problems caused.What didn’t work for our children was St Paul’s insistence on rote teaching. The children come in, sit down, and are instructed/lectured for most of the day. They are given worksheets to reinforce the lessons, and are expected to quietly fill in the worksheets at their tables. There is very little collaborative learning amongst the children – even during playtime, the children each choose a toy and play quietly by themselves. They don’t interact, play together, pretend or share things between each other. There is almost no gross motor play/exploration/learning, as there quite simply is no room on the campus. The classrooms are extremely small and have no room for typical preschool things like centers or active pretend play. The outdoor play area is extremely small and very limited in activities. Arts & crafts, a preschool mainstay, are virtually non-existent. So are teaching methods such as sensory play and manipulatives. You learn to count by repeating what the teacher says and writing numbers repeatedly, not by counting physical objects. You learn your letters by writing them over and over again with a pencil on paper, not by acting out the letters, drawing them with a variety of media, or exploring how they start different words with different sounds. If the children do not learn well by rote teaching, there is no personalization of lessons to a child. There is no time taken to determine if a different learning/teaching style would reach the child, if something could be explained differently. The child is simply labeled as unteachable, a trouble maker, or just left behind while the rest of the class goes on. Our children learned virtually nothing in their time at St Paul’s, and are now playing catch-up to their peers who were able to learn the basics of letters and numbers in other environments.

Starting 2012 With a Clean Slate

Since August 2010, I have been eating a "clean" diet of healthy whole foods with no preservatives, trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, msg, and other man-made chemicals that masquerade as food. I've shunned a few prescriptions, lost 31 pounds, dropped 2 dress sizes, don't have daily headaches anymore, have tons more energy and just feel healthier. But, the latest and most interesting news is that my Hypothyroidism is seemingly disappearing! I've gone from .175 mcg to .125 mcg in the last year and my doctor thinks it's due to my new lifestyle! Whoever would have thought that FOOD could cure? Well, I actually believe that or I wouldn't be doing all of this.
Today is January 1. The day when millions of folks resolve to eat better, lose weight, stop smoking or get organized. Well, I'd like to be the one to help you do all of that - except get organized, I'm not so great at that!
So, it's Day 1. Grab a notebook or computer (if that's your thing) and start planning. Let's plan out your meals for the week and figure out how to stock your pantry.
Write down your family's favorite go-to meals. Make a Master List of those meals (there should be at least 20 to choose from). Then, every week, peruse your list and make your dinner plans for the week. I've learned that when I meal plan, there's a lot less waste in my fridge and when Thursday rolls around, I'm not stuck with "what's for dinner?"
Your weekly meal plan could be as simple as Monday - Chicken; Tuesday - Pork; Wed - crock pot night, etc...
Then, from there I look at my favorite blogs, Clean Eating magazine, Food Network magazine, All Recipes, Food Network.com, and other favorite sites to find specific recipes for the chicken, pork, fish or vegetarian dishes I'm having that week. It is essential to plan.
On Sat or Sun, I do my grocery shopping for the week and when I get home, I look at my meal plan and wash, prep and cut my veggies for my meals that week. Last week it took me 40 min to prepare all my veggies. I lay out a huge cutting board and colander and wash and chop away. Everything is stored in plastic bags or bowls marked with the meal they are intended for. It makes dinner time prep go so fast!

Now, on to stocking a "clean" pantry. If you are anything like me, and there's a cookie in your house, it's going to be gone while no one is looking! So, I just don't buy them. There's not one bag of candy, cookies or treats in our house. I just can't be tempted. I mean it's ok to occasionally have a treat, but to have them on hand on a daily basis is just setting yourself up for failure. I had a tin of homemade Christmas cookies on the counter (3 varieties) over a 2-week period and I gained a couple of pounds, but most horribly, it was all in my belly! Sugar goes straight to my gut - so gross! So, I started the new year off with a great workout this morning and a run yesterday. That's right, I RAN!! Something I don't normally do unless someone is chasing me or I'm going to miss a plane. I registered myself for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in DC, in March! A huge challenge for me, but I'm very excited. Now, onto the pantry...

Your clean pantry should always contain:
Clean grains like quinoa, wild rice, whole wheat couscous, steel cut oats
sea salt
ground flax seed
natural peanut or other nut butters, like almond or cashew
BPA-free, Organic canned foods for convenience (like beans, tomatoes)
Unbleached flours
Cold-pressed olive oil
Raw honey
raw, unsalted nuts & seeds
Spices & herbs

Your fridge should always have:
greek yogurt
raw or Organic milk (or milk substitutes like almond milk)
fermented foods like sauerkraut or pickles (and not Vlasic!)

fresh seasonal produce cut & ready to eat or cook;

Dark leafy greens like Kale, Collards, broccoli, zucchini, red leaf and green leaf lettuce are good choices. Try new veggies you haven’t eaten before like artichokes, eggplant, Swiss chard, okra, or Bok Choy!

Carrots, celery, onions - this trinity is great to keep on hand for endless meal possibilities

Meats:
I buy grass-fed beef, pork and pastured chicken. I also buy sustainable, wild seafood.

In order to lose weight, this is THE only plan you need:
Breakfast - You need to start your day with a protein like an egg or whey protein shake. Some of the specialty food items I eat are purchased on Amazon. You'll find a link to my Amazon store on the left side of my blog under Links.
Snack - nuts or pumpkin seeds, whole fruit
Lunch is usually another protein source with a veggie, like carrots, cucumber slices, edamame, tuna salad, chicken salad, or a wrap with homemade mayo.
- Drink lots of water throughout the day -
Afternoon Snack - frozen organic grapes, crackers with hummus, sliced pineapple, plain greek yogurt with raw honey, green smoothie
Dinner - Time to break out your meal plan - is it Fish Night? To really boost weight loss in the beginning, skip a side of rice, potatoes or starch and add an extra veggie. For example, Broiled Tilapia with roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower, with side salad.

You'll notice there's no muffins, bagels, baked goods or scoops of ice cream here. Not that those are completely off limits for you, but I don't eat them anymore. There's no healthy redeeming qualities about eating a 400 calorie muffin. In order to lose weight, you have to STOP buying these white flour, sugar bombs.
Ok - that's it for now. You've got some homework to do.

Question: Do We Ever REALLY Leave High School?

I recently joined a mommy group. This was kind of a big deal for me because I'd sworn them off in lieu of the more organically occurring relationships that start happening when your kids start Elementary School. However, my 3 year old wasn't getting all the interaction that I wanted, and when I started homeschooling I lost a lot of my public school mom friends because we didn't see each other any more.

I need Moms Night Outs. I just do.

The group I found ended up being an awesome group of girls, but joining a "Mommy Group" was hard for me, because before this I'd had SEVERAL bad experiences because Mommy Groups, in my experience, are like the high school cafeteria, but with slightly different labels.

1- The Crunchy Ones
These mamas are co-sleeping, attachment parenting, boob-slinging pros and while they do not discipline their own children for fear of repressing their spirits, they seem very concerned with other people's children acting in ways that are not "respectful of Rivyr's space". There is typically a Militant Crunchy Mom who, on at least one occasion, has made a new mommy cry because she cannot physically breastfeed, and therefore is obviously going to give her baby cancer with that awful formula she's using.

2- The Popular Ones
In the movies, there's always poetic justice about the former cheerleaders who get fat and ugly. Not so at mommy group! (Well, at least for enough of them that they get their own group!) These women are perfectly coiffed and toned at all times, and even at an 8am playgroup, their makeup is fantastic and their brand-name track suit is pink with sparkles. They make time for manicures, highlights, and facials, and just like in high school, everyone wants to be friends with them. For the mom that has lost both her figure and her self-identity, these women can be torture.

3- The Type A Overachievers
They're planners and do-ers and go-ers. They probably have a paper planner AND a fully-updated iPhone/Blackberry. They know EVERYTHING and they've been EVERYWHERE and they're coordinating a bake sale for starving African Children, nursing a baby, and running their own business from their mobile device while leaving one hand free for their toddler, who, by the way, speaks 941 words flawlessly, all of which she has recorded in her impeccably kept and award winning scrapbooks. Did you buy that pan of brownies? Because she stayed up all night and made goldfish crackers from scratch in the shape of each child's favorite fish.

4- The Partyliners
If gossip were an olympic sport, these girls would have a gold medal for every year since 2004. Frequently also the most willing to listen, they're also the one everyone goes to when they want to know the scoop on why Shelby was crying into her coffee last playdate. They're not exactly sure where their child is and what they're doing, but they know exactly who's husband is "working late hours, ifyouknowwhatimean".

5- The Hanging By a Threads
These women just need a hug. They have at least a newborn, who has colic, they've not brushed their hair since about the time said child was born, they're wearing something with baby vomit and possibly cheetos cheese smears because that's all they can get their preschooler to eat for breakfast. They will not accept help, they will not take a happy little blue pill, and they will not enroll their eldest in preschool because THEY.ARE.FINE.

6- The Mommy
She's about being a mom. She reads Dooce, Rants from Mommyland, has a paid Our-Kids.com subscription, a Disney Family Magazine subscription, and gets RSS feed updates from Certifikid every 2 seconds. She loves being a mom. She's super mom. She's got family-people on the back of her car, matching stationary, and her kids are dressed to match. She's not saying that moms who work don't love their kids, she's just saying that, well, if you REALLY want to be home, you'll make the time.

7- There's probably more....but it's late.

Basically, as Allison Pearson puts it: "Take one nice liberal woman who prides herself on being nonjudgmental. Now give that woman a baby. In no time at all, she could teach the Taliban a thing or two about rigid intolerance."

Really, though, the problem isn't that we've all turned nuts. The problem is that, no matter what group you fit into (and I can see myself in any of these, except the Popular Ones, on any given day), what we all really want is for someone to look at us, give us a hug, and say "Lady, you are doing an awesome job at something that is freaking hard. There's so many options, so many pitfalls, and so many people that want to judge you, and I just want you to know that I agree with you and you're doing it right."

We're all really just trying to justify ourselves as moms, and because of that we have a tendency to seek like-minded company so that we can feel like we're part of a group that is "doing it our way" so we know that we're "not totally messing our kids up".

I think that, now on Team Varsity Mom with an 8 year old, 5 year old, and 3 year old, my most recent foray into the mommy group will be more successful and less hurtful than in the past because, unlike before, I realize that the popular mom I want to be is totally jealous of crunchy mom's ability to nurser her children and secretly hurting inside that she can't. Crunchy mom, as much as she's ohm-ing on the sofa, she's exhausted from night nursing and co-sleeping and she just wants a night off, too. The Mommy mom? She is totally uncomfortable some days with her new role that took her out of a job that defined her for a full decade and now she's trying to "fake it till she makes it".

We're all trying to get through the days, and frequently the long nights. We all want someone to tell us that our kid isn't going to end up on the 6:00 news saying that he shot everyone from the top of the belltower because his mom didn't feed him organic produce. We want to feel supported.

At some point, you really do become more self-secure, but until that happens, let me be the first to tell you that if you're not beating your child, you feed them multiple times a day, and you don't call them names and tell them you love them, you're doing a great job. Your kid is going to be okay. And so are you, and so is that equally insecure mom sitting across from you that you wish you could be. If you read your child a book every once in awhile and make sure they get hugs, you're a freaking Rock Star. We're all in this together, and even when we're militantly different to the point of inadvertently insulting each other, we're all very much the same.

And, by the way, we did leave high school. Sometimes it's just hard to remember you can pick your tray up and talk to anyone you want. If you're struggling to find a supportive group as a mom, hang in there, because they will come, and probably not in the form you expected.

Garbage Disposals Need Love Too

When washing dishes or cooking dinner, some people have a tendency to throw any and every last thing down the garbage disposal. If you are one of those people, STOP DOING IT RIGHT NOW! You are shortening the life of your disposal and setting yourself up for an expensive repair.

FYI: Garbage Disposals Can Only Take So Much

During the holidays, plumbers get more calls for clogged or broken garbage disposals than any other service, because people don’t realize there are limits to what can go down them. Garbage disposals were built for remnants of food left on plates, not full meals. Their blades aren’t very sharp. They are only meant to grind up small bits of soft foods. The key word there being: small. A plate full of mash potatoes is as bad for a disposal as a plate full of chicken bones. Put either one in, and you’ll be calling a plumber because you broke the blades.

Which Foods are Bad for my Disposal?

The rule of thumb for foods that should go down a disposal: anything that doesn’t dissolve quickly in water. So, right off the bat, grease and anything oily, like gravy or salad dressing, is out. You’re probably wondering why not, doesn’t it just flow right down the drain? No, it doesn’t. Even if it’s hot and fluid when you pour it in the drain, it’s going to cool almost instantly and coat the inside of your garbage disposal and drains. The coating will trap anything solid you put down the drain and before you know it, you’ll have a clog.
Now, your drains are going to end up coated with oily deposits one way or another from the soaps and detergents you use. (Still, there’s no reason to help the process along by dumping greasy foods down there.) The oil traps anything solid, so things like coffee grinds, egg shells, and nuts are also a no-go for the garbage disposal. That’s because any one of these will cause granular waste, a.k.a. little bits of hard stuff that are going to get stuck, causing your drains to slow and eventually clog.
The foods that’ll probably surprise you that you REALLY shouldn’t put down the drain are really starchy foods like desserts, potatoes, and cereals. These are actually some of the most damaging foods you can put down the drain. Why? Well, in water, starches turn into sugars and sugars are sticky… really sticky. In a disposal, if that sticky residue builds up on the blades they’ll stick together and fail.

How Not To Clean A Garbage Disposal

Rule #1: NEVER clean a garbage disposal with chemical drain cleaners.
Drain cleaners are usually made to stick to the insides of pipes so they can dissolve whatever else is stuck there. Remember that sticky = bad for garbage disposals. So sticky cleaners = very bad. You could end up having to fish all the highly caustic chemicals out by hand, which we promise you will not enjoy having to do.
Drain cleaners are also highly, HIGHLY caustic. Most are powerful enough to actually dissolve the inner parts of your garbage disposal. It’s not like they’re going to melt the machine our from under your sink. You’ll likely get away with using them for a while. But, they are going to make all the gears and fittings just a little bit smaller every time you use them. Over time, the parts will start to loosen and before you know it, gears are slipping, breaking and your disposal isn’t working.

The Right Way To Clean A Garbage Disposal

The best way to clean your garbage disposal is to simply run cold soapy water through it.

Put the drain stopper in.
Fill up the sink with cold water.
Dump in a bunch of dish detergent.
Mix it up so all the water is soapy.
Throw in a handful of ice cubes to help clean the blades.
Then, pull the plug and hit the on switch.

The soap is mild enough to gently clean without harming the inner workings of the machine. If the drain still smells a little funky after you finish running the soap through it, you can throw some citrus fruit peels in with a few more ice cubes.

In the end, your garbage disposal is just like your car…

The better you take care of it, the longer it will run. Anything bigger than a “scrap” should go in the garbage. The only thing you should clean it with is cold soapy water, ice and maybe a citrus peal. Follow these two simple rules and your disposal should give you years of reliable service.

Toys: A Leading Cause Of Clogged Sewer Lines

Sewer pipes clog when their insides become coated with oily deposits that in turn trap solid objects that try to make their way down the drain. The bigger the object that gets stuck, the more surface area the oily deposits have to stick to, the faster the sewer lines end up clogging.
Toys that go down the toilet are a big help to the clogs. They’ve got lots of surface area for the grease to stick to. Once they’re embedded in the grease, they’ll start snagging all the other things that go down the drain, like toilet paper and tampons, and before you know it, your pipe is clogged and raw sewage is backing up into your basement. Once that happens, the 99 cent toy you bought with their happy meal is now costing you thousands of dollars to clean up after.
So even if your toilet isn’t immediately clogged, a child flushing a toy down the drain is still a big problem. So what now? Well, the good news is, your toilets, sinks, showers and tubs are all going to keep working for the time being. The bad news is, if a toy is stuck in your sewer line, nothing short of hydro-jetting is going to move it out.

A Plumbing Snake Just Isn’t Gonna Cut It

A plumbing snake, which is essentially a long wire with a spatula on the end of it, will scrape the toy off the inside of the pipe once it becomes stuck, but it won’t push it down the line. You’ll likely have to have the line snaked several times before the toy makes it to the county sewer where the pipes are larger and a clog is the county’s problem, not yours.
Hydro-jetting, which uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of the pipe will push everything down the pipe, will clear the toy all the way down on the first try. It costs more than snaking the line, but it gives you the benefits of knowing the line is completely clear and, because it cleans all the greasy deposits off the inside of the pipe, it will actually have the long term benefit of preventing future clogs. The one downside to hydro-jetting is there is the potential for it to backfire, almost literally. If a clog is big enough, it may take the jetter time to break through it. With 18 gallons a minute flowing into the clogged sewer pipe, the time it takes the jetter to break through may be too long, and all the water it shoots down the pipe can very rapidly back up into your house. A good plumber will actually have you sign a waiver acknowledging the potential for this to happen.
In the end, the #1 rule when it comes to children’s toys and toilets is prevention. Once the toy is down the drain, you’re stuck. Keep the toys, and any other foreign objects for that matter (including feminine sanitary objects), out of toilets at all cost.

As you may remember from facebook, I got to go to a Real.Live.Mommy.Blogger.Thing!!

Y'all, if there is a swag bag and I get to put on makeup, I will show up at your event. Make a note of that for your upcoming events where you would like a completely unknown person from the internet to show up at your organization's event. Swag bag + makeup + no kids= Me there. Your MOPS group needs a speaker? I'll show up. PTA meeting? Yup. There, too. Seriously.

I was nationally ranked in Model United Nations in high school, people. I'll even give an impromptu speech on the topic of your choice. 83.4% of statistics are made up on the spot, anyway. (You can't tell it from the way I write, but I actually do give lovely speeches!)

So...back to the business at hand. Jessica from A Parent in Silver Spring is who most "location based" mommy bloggers want to be when they grow up. I am not really a blogger because I (usually) don't subject you all to stories about my day-to-day with kids, and I'm not really all that legit because I don't make money doing this, and at the first event I went to that Jessica was at, someone had to pull me aside and go "CAN! YOU! BELIEVE! PARENTINSILVERSPRINGISHERE!!!!" and I had to smile and nod like I knew. Then, like an idiot, I met OMGAPARENTINSILVERSPRING!! And even with the warning was totally the idiot that went "um, who?" to her very confident introduction.

So, that was the first time I felt like an uninformed idiot at a mommy blogger event. It happens a lot. I like to think of it as reminding me about the first time you show up at a playgroup surrounded by people with a different parenting style that they all know about and you've never heard of.

"YOU HAZ NOT READ DR. FERBER??? ZOMG YOUR BABIES WILL HAZ STUPIDS!!"
"Ummm, actually, I don't really read baby books...I figure we'll just pick it up as we go."
"YOUR NONCHALANCE MAKES MY HEAD EXPLODE! MUST HAZ PLANZ FOR BABIEEEZZZ"!
"Right. Okay, we're actually late for slurpees and playing with knives."

There was a point here. Oh! Right. So, I got to go to another of these fun events (And, they really are fun. I love meeting all the cool women who are out there sharing their passion and information with the world.) and this time I knew who A Parent in Silver Spring was. Which was especially good, because she was hosting.

Yup, that's her on the right. Check.

I met a bunch of very cool bloggers who cover everything from technology to their kids' daily lives. Oh, and there was a coffee lady. I loved her. Yay, coffee!!

So, those were the players. Bunch of moms, some nice T-Mobile employees who wore pink sparkle santa hats (even the guys), and a bunch of yummy looking food that I did not eat because I am on a perpetually failing diet. Yay.

This is me, unfortunately sucking my face into my neck while laughing at the poor T-Mobile guy in the pink hat. There were games you could play for chances to win T-mobile devices, which was fun, but let me just say that those people who claim you can "want things into being" are totally right because while I was just meandering and enjoying there were some mommas that WANTED A PHONE!!! NEEDED A PHONE!!! PHONE PHONE PHONE!!

And those women? They totally won! I don't think anyone that won was like me and thinking "huh! that'd be a fun giveaway on my blog!", no- the winners were all HYPER FOCUSED ON WINNING! So, for what it's worth, if you ever go to one of these deals, be FOCUSED and clear with the universe about what you want.

This lady, for example, (love the iPhone in the T-mobile picture? me, too!) won a phone. I'm smiling in the background, but that's because I'm happy to be alive because she was actually filming the entire time they were doing the drawing and whipped her hand around to film herself screaming.

Y'all, I almost got pimp-slapped by an iPhone. No joke. I was ready, though, because my iPhone has a faux-crystal studded case, and I'm pretty sure we could have taken that flimsy see-through one in a fight....

Actually, probably not. I break my screen a lot and my husband would've been ticked. But, it would have been funny.

Me: "And then I was all "Surprise Jazz Hands!"

Blogger Across from me: "I am in awe of how ginormous you look next to me, from the fluff of your hair to the height to the massive girth! Did your mom put miracle grow in your cheerios?"

So, in the end, being as I am an Apple girl, I thought that I would go to this T-Mobile thing and pick up my swag bag (which was cute!) and leave happy. I didn't really look at the phones, to be completely honest, because my iPhone, as previously mentioned, has a sparkle-case and that's all I really need in a phone carrier. I drop calls like they're hot, but it's gotten better over the last few years, and my husband picks our carrier without any input from me, so it doesn't really matter how I feel, WE WILL HAVE IPHONES!!

However....

There was this really cool thing called a Springboard that I totally fell in love with. Here's the text conversation I had with my iHubby about it:

Me: "Dude- I am actually in love with this Tmobile tablet thingy"

iHubby: "Ugh, why?"

Me: "It's kindle-sized, not as bulky as your iPad, and it has flash!"

iHubby: "Flash is dead. Adobe said they won't maintain it anymore. Flash website should abandon all hope."

Me: "You're a dork. This thing is cute."

Whatever. I still want one. We don't do Santa, so if one of you could tell him for me, that'd be awesome.

(And yes, I know what you're thinking, I do love him for his suaveness.)

In addition to the Springboard that I love, but am not allowed to have because it doesn't have a lowercase "i" in front of its name, T-Mobile gave us some really great resources, including a list of fun holiday apps and a list of questions to ask if you're buying a mobile device for the holidays. I was a huge fan of the questions to ask, because my husband obviously has very strong opinions about technology, and buying for him can be intimidating. I'm putting them in here, too, because I'm really shooting for the longest blog post, ever, which I assume most of you have quit reading because you abandoned all hope, much like flash-based websites.
