8 Easy Steps to Save Money, Help the Environment and Our Community

Being green is a big buzzword these days. Everyone has heard of being eco-friendly and helping to reduce the environmental footprint, but many don’t know what they can do, or think their one contribution won’t make much of a dent.

At home, you can help protect the environment in so many ways. Every small step helps our community to become cleaner and helps make an impact on the environment. 

Everyone can do their part by practicing the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

We can all make some changes in our home that are easy and save us money! Here are some tips that are easy to do:

• ·      Reuse and recycle what you already have! You can save tons of money on storage containers by reusing glass and plastic food containers when they are empty.
• ·      Participate in recycling programs, such as recycling cans, plastic, glass and paper products.
• ·      Use bio-degradable trash bags that are made of corn and dissolve over time, adding less plastic to our landfills.
• ·      Save water and energy by avoiding using permanent press cycle when doing laundry, which uses an added 5 gallons for the extra rinse. Wash laundry in cold water, since 80-90% of the machines energy is used to heat the water. I promise your clothes will be clean!
• ·      Avoid washing your car in your driveway.  Who has the time anyhow! Few people realize that washing our cars in our driveways is one of the most environmentally unfriendly things we can do. The average home driveway car wash uses 140 gallons of water, whereas an environmentally friendly car wash uses just 30 gallons and recycles water in a controlled water management system. And the soap chemicals run off your car and go straight into our storm drains which eventually get into our river, streams, creeks and bays where it poisons aquatic life and wreaks other ecosystem havoc.
• ·      Use non-toxic cleaners in your home. There are many natural cleaners on the market these days that you can buy.
• ·      You can also make great environmentally safe cleaners out of regular household items. The acid in white vinegar makes it naturally capable of killing mold and bacteria, and you can use it to clean mirrors and windows. Baking soda is great for deodorizing, especially with all that sports equipment from your kids.  Lemon juice is another bacteria killer and is a multi-purpose cleaner that’s useful for scrubbing walls and floors.
• ·      Turn off Lights: I know this sounds incredibly easy and almost silly, but turning off the lights when you are not using them, as well as putting your computers, TV’s, etc on a power strip and turning them off nightly, saves tons of money and energy.  Electronics use a huge amount of energy, so turning them off helps reduce our energy consumption.

Not only will this help reduce the environmental footprint, but can also rid your home of the toxins that can cause major health problems from continuous exposure or even small amounts of exposure over time.

You can also help teach your children about being good to our earth by making small changes in your home which are easy, more economical, and SMART!

Do you like how I made that halloween colors? See the effort I go to for you guys, even after midnight? It's crazy, I know. 

2) If you have upcoming events, the propose an event feature on the calendar page is working again.  Please enter your event there, and I'll get it up asap.  If you submit a harvest fest/trunk or treat/halloween event, please please PLEASE submit it to the calendar, as well!

If you're a homeschooler (or have a preschooler who's home on Monday) The National Marine Corps Museum is hosting their homeschool day today. Specifically designed hands-on educational stations for homeschool families to enjoy throughout the Museum.  This year’s theme will be geography.  Free. 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

The ARC of Prince William County facilitates an Autism Parent Support Group that meets the 4th Tuesday of each month. This parent-run group offers support, education, and social opportunities for families who have children (of any age) on the Autism spectrum. Child care is available. Select restaurants in Historic Manassas, VA are set to host their semi­annual Historic Manassas Restaurant Week from Sunday, September 21st through Saturday, September 27th, 2014.  Take advantage of the great deals and schedule your child in advance to attend Kids Night Out/Parents Night out at one of the great venues listed on our calendar.  We haven't tried them all, but I can vouch for Vertical Rock being amazing!

From 11am-5pm, check out the Bumps, Babies, and Beyond Expo at Potomac Mills Mall, because I will be there, and I want to pretend I'm cool.  Come and say hi to me so I can pretend. Plus, there will be tons of great vendors and demonstrators there as well as performances, a diaper derby, and more.

National Archives Marks Constitution Day with Free Mobile App and eBook

Washington, DC. . . In celebration of Constitution Day, the National Archives Center for Legislative Archives today launched Congress Creates the Bill of Rights, a free mobile app and eBook.  These new free educational resources commemorate the First Congress and its role in the creation of this landmark document.

The Center for Legislative Archives, which houses the official records of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, created the app and eBook to mark the 225th anniversary of Congress’s historic achievement in proposing a set of amendments that would become the Bill of Rights.  The Center also created lesson plans and teaching activities for teachers and students to use with the app and eBook. The app, eBook, and educational resources are all available online at
www.archives.gov/legislative/resources/bill-of-rights.html

The app is available for download on iPad at the App Store. The eBook is available for download on the National Archives website and in iTunes and the iBookstore for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

Congress Creates the Bill of Rights mobile app is an interactive learning tool for tablets that lets the user experience the proposals, debates, and revisions that shaped the Bill of Rights in the First Congress. Its menu-based organization presents a historic overview, a one-stop source that includes the evolving language of each proposed amendment as it was shaped in the House and the Senate, a close-up look at essential documents, a “time-lapse” display of the creation of the First Amendment, and more.

Congress Creates the Bill of Rights eBook presents a historic narrative focusing on James Madison's leadership role in creating the Bill of Rights and effectively completing the Constitution. Starting with the crises facing the nation in the 1780s, the narrative traces the call for constitutional amendments from the state ratification conventions, and takes the reader inside Congress as the House and the Senate worked to formulate a set of amendments to send to the states.

Project support was provided by The Chisholm Foundation, the Dyson Foundation, Humanities Texas, The Foundation for the National Archives and the National Archives Trust Fund.  Both products were designed by Research & Design Ltd, of Arlington, VA, in collaboration with Center for Legislative Archives staff.

The Center for Legislative Archives—part of the National Archives—preserves and makes available to researchers the official records of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

Educators can use these historical documents to teach about representative democracy, how Congress works, and the important role Congress has played throughout American history. Anniversary of the Potomac Blockade 2014 Living History

Join Leesylvania State Park for a Living History with a civil war encampment with costumed historians to learn about the soldiers' lives.  Cannon Firing will occur on the hour between 11am and 4pm, Musket Firing will take place at the visitor's center, and you can sample and purchase Civil War Era foods.  September 27 and 28 from 11am-4pm each day. 

Giveaway: Manassas Restaurant Week

In honor of Manassas Restaurant Week (September 21-27, 2014!!) I am so excited to share a special giveaway from one of the participating restaurants, Malones of Manassas.  

Located in the heart of Historic Downtown Manassas (9329 Main Street), Malone's is actually located inside an historic, landmark church built shortly after the Civil War. Malone's houses both a casual and upscale restaurant and bar offering the best of Southern American cuisine and hospitality. 

Their executive chef, Scott Bilstad, brings over 10 years of culinary experience to Malones.  His expansive knowledge comes from studying in prominent kitchens throughout the US and Europe.  Chef Scott also studied in Japan while serving our country in the United States Navy.  A native of Fredericksburg, VA, Chef Scott supports using local, fresh ingredients and is currently curing his own bacon, prosciutto, salmon, and white fish- all of which are considered "featured items" at Malones. 

Owner Kevin Malone is also a local! Kevin has over 30 years experience in the Restaurant, Hospitality and Management Industry. A native of Manassas, and graduate of Osborn High School, Kevin knew that when the time came to create his own dining experience it would be back in his home town of Manassas. He’s added a contemporary twist to all his client’s favorite dishes and libations in a setting that is as unique and conversational as the menu. 

Now let's get to the exciting part (although home-cured prosciutto is pretty exciting):
