Isla’s Story

Give Back 2 Others has chosen to honor a newly diagnosed child named Isla Kate Lucks.  Isla lives in the community and is in the fight of her life.  On July 31, 2014, just shy of 15 months old, Isla Kate was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. This is a rare pediatric cancer affecting the nerve cells. For Isla, her diagnosis came through the discovery of a large tumor on her left adrenal gland in her abdomen. This beautiful little girl now has a long and difficult treatment plan ahead of her. Her strong willed personality has given her the nickname, “Isla the Fierce”.  She fights with grace and dignity and has been lauded by the medical team as one of the best babies they have ever served. Her tenacious spirit and love of laughter has kept the staff on their toes. Isla is a ‘Mama’s girl’, a chatterbox, and she loves to sing and dance.  Her favorite foods are marshmallows and olives. She loves Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and her family; especially her best friend and older brother Elliott.  Throughout the next year and a half, she will be in and out of hospitals, enduring painful treatments and traveling far to receive the best care available.  Give Back 2 Others desires to rally around this amazing little girl and her family to show them how much they are loved and supported.  Our fundraising event on November 21^st will be the opportunity we have to support this family in tangible ways.  We hope to see you there!

About GB2O

Give Back 2 Others started as a simple holiday party at the home of Holly & Jason Andrzejewski in 2009.  The focus each year was  to “give back” to someone in need. Holly and Jason asked guests to bring donations or  gifts to be given to a designated family.  Each family chosen had a member struggling with a life-threatening illness.  Through the incredible generosity of friends, Holly and Jason were able to make a difference in ways they had never dreamed possible. Holly and Jason began to wonder if it would be possible to do more.  In 2011 they decided it was time to take it to the next level. With the help of a local 501c3 charity, Trevor’s Treasurers, they organized a party that received more than 300 guests and raised a large sum of money for Trevor’s Treasurers. This incredible experience solidified their desire to continue the event and ”Giving Back 2 Others” was born.  On August 20, 2014, Give Back 2 Others was created as a legitimate Non-Profit organization.  They are currently waiting on their 501c3 approval from the IRS, which is expected any day. With the help of the Board of Directors and many active volunteers, they have big plans for the future of GB2O and look forward to helping many families in the future.

Youth For Tomorrow's Country Fair

We had such a great time at Joe Gibb's Youth for Tomorrow Country Fair and Auction.  Tickets were $10/adult, $5/kid, and ages 3 and under were free.  There was a $5 off coupon on their website, and several people mentioned they got their tickets from an online deal site (not sure if it was living social or groupon). I'd never been before, although I see their folding board signs all over the county every year. This is a very, very well done production.  Some of the fun included:

• Bounce Houses/Inflatable Obstacle Courses (more than I cared to count, probably upwards of a dozen)
• Junior Firefighter Challenge
• Redskins Players Play60 Challenge
• Washington Nationals NatMobile
• Hog Races
• Petting Zoo
• Rides
• Crafts
• Vendor Fair
• Huge Food Court (additional fee)
• Horse Carriages and Mini Train Rides
• Entertainment on various stages including cheerleading, gymnastics, and dance

There was probably more.  Honestly, we spent from 11-3 at the fair and probably could've stayed longer and still not seen and done everything.  The lines were manageable for all the rides, except perhaps laser tag, which got a little out of hand because of some "spot saving" for a "family" of 20 or so, but other than that the wait was generally okay.  

I would definitely recommend checking this out in the future! Not only was a it a great time, it's for a charity, and that's a great combination. 

Giveaway: National Geographic Museum Presents Spinosaurus

Because I grew up in the Washington, DC area, I am something of a brat about paying for museums.  We have all these fantastic Smithsonians! They're free! Well, I mean, taxes, but they're free!! The first time we went to Philadelphia with a friend and I had to pay for a museum I just stared at the woman in horror- what do you mean there's an admission fee?? 

Preposterous. 

In the meantime, the Smithsonian Natural History Museum has shut it's dinosaur exhibit for cleaning and several museums have opened in DC that charge admission, including the National Geographic Museum, which is currently displaying Spinosaurus. 

And here's the thing about pay museums you guys, they do a nice job.  The exhibits are lovely and frequently feature interactive technology or very cool models.  The museum isn't packed to the brim the way the Smithsonians are frequently overflowing with people.  It's actually really lovely. 

 We learned that there are fossil stores in Morocco.  You can just go and buy gemstones and fossil parts.  Apparently you can't take them out of the country, but everybody does.  We are currently planning an imaginary field trip to Morocco, although if everyone wants to buy ads so I can actually go, I'm cool with that, too!

We loved learning about how this full-scale model was built using a 3D printer.  We would like to have a 3D printer at home, but will settle for watching videos about scanning fossils and printing dinosaurs.  That's pretty awesome.

 There are two other sections to the National Geographic Museum.  While we were there, they were redoing the International Food Exhibit.  Mars Up Close was open, though, and it's a very small, but interesting section and displays models of the various Mars rovers.

So, overall, I would say that the National Geographic Museum is worth a look.  If you're paying to go, I would confirm that all the exhibits are open.  It's well done but small, and I would have been disappointed if I paid for admission and there was a section closed.  

Tickets are $11 for adults and $7 for children, or you can add a 3D movie (Admission/Movie is $16 adults, $12 kids).  The exhibits are well-done and the information is great.  The kids enjoyed walking through, and you can see everything in the museum in about 1-2 hours, depending on how much you're reading.  The gift shop is also very nice, if you're into that, which my kids totally are.

Date Night: Cheers Art Studio

Gina from Cheers has been inviting me out for some time to check out their studio- but to be honest, I've been avoiding it because I have zero artistic talent.

Maybe negative zero.  Can you have that?

Anyhow, we were near each other at the Bumps, Babies, and Beyond Expo and she invited me to come for their first "Date Night" this past Friday, and since there was nothing on the calendar, I said yes.  I figured worst case scenario, my husband and I could make fun of each other's total lack of talent in the painting department.  Don't get me wrong- if you need a room painted in one solid color, my husband is a boss- but painting anything else? Probably no.

But then, the strangest thing happened.  We had a ton of fun, and it turns out we don't suck nearly as much as we thought we did!

Let's back up.  Cheers is a "fun evening out" venue in Woodbridge off Minnieville Road.  You can bring your own libations and snacks, and an art teacher takes you through a prepared project.  I found individual Tiramisu and Wine Juice Boxes.  I am not really a drinker- and these were gross.  I don't recommend them.  (Or maybe that's just me not being a wine drinker) The tiramisu was good.

On the night we went, we were making two love birds sitting on a branch.  The sample project was daytime, but the teacher went on to demo an evening scene for those of us who needed different colors for our houses- which is what we went with. The people sitting near us were really nice, and incidentally, our friends showed up (totally unplanned!) so that was fun, too! First we did some swirly colors.  I was really good at this part.  Light in the center, dark on the outside.  The good news is, if you accidentally get some red or some green in your brush, people think you were being artsy! Just go with it! Don't tell them you're, in fact, a giant klutz!

Next we made birds.  There was a trick! We made ovals, filled them in, and then put the brush flat on the canvas and swirled it around itself to make the head.  #EvenICanDoThat

So here's where it started to get a little dicey.  I happen to like following directions.  My husband, however, wanted to be all innovative and do squares instead of circles.  I wanted to get an attitude about the fact that our finished product wasn't going to look like the teacher's (and therefore was not going to be winning), so I just sat back and let him go with the squares.  If I'd been making my own, I would have copied EXACTLY because that's how you DO it. 

 I drag this poor man out to more weird stuff than is fair, so the least I could do was let him do the squares.  Then he abandoned me to take a work call, so I added some color to each square and decided it was okay since everyone else was like "Wow, squares!!" I assume they were doing that to be nice, but I am pretending it's because it looks good.

In the end, we totally had fun.  We were even both impressed with our ability to make swirly colors and birds.  I'm not saying we're going to quit our day jobs, but it turned out pretty good considering the source (namely, two un-talented people!). I think we'd actually both really like to do it again- which is really surprising because this is not our thing.  I'd get my own canvas, though, so that I can copy the teacher exactly, because that's the kind of kid I am.  If you like to work cooperatively, that's perfect for date night...but if you're a little more independent, there's lots of individual options, too!    There was lots of laughing going on, and everyone seemed to have a good time. 

Ultimately, everyone's seemed pretty happy in the end :) A lovely way to spend a Friday night with my favorite guy in the world.

Grace UMC- Put on your favorite costume and join us at 5:00 p.m. for free food, games, face painting, hayrides, and a parking lot filled with decorated vehicles for Trunk-Or-Treat! And then stick around! At 7:00 p.m., the first 15 minutes of this year’s PipeScreams Organ Concert will feature pumpkin carols and some spooky fun music for all the kids! After that, we hope you’ll stay to enjoy the talents of several other local organists as they wow us with their instrumental magic.

Grace Baptist Church The 2014 Fall Festival is Friday, October 31 in the GBC Parking Lot. Fall Festival is a FREE outreach event for the whole family.  Bring a neighbor or friend!  Games/booths are geared for children from walkers - fifth grade.  Play a game and get a prize.  Cotton candy, popcorn, hotdogs, inflatable's and pony rides will also be on site.  All can participate by signing up to help/volunteer for 20 minutes in a booth/game/inflatable.  Sign-up sheets will be in the foyer starting in October.     http://www.gracehome.org/fall-festival-is-coming

Friday, October 31, the community is invited to take part in Mall-o-ween, a family friendly trick-or-treating alternative. In addition, Potomac Mills will host Mall-o-ween, a mall-wide trick-or-treating event on Friday, October 31 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. For added fun, guests will also have their choice of face painting or balloon art*. Participating retailers will have a Halloween sticker in their window. 

November 1

Grace Lutheran Church (1601 Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge), will be having a Fall Festival on Saturday, November 1st from 4-7 pm.  Please come and enjoy a "Trunk or Treat", games, crafts, face painting, a showing of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", and fellowship.  This is another opportunity for kids (and adults) to wear their costumes!

Our school Mary G Porter Traditional School is having a fun run/walk and Harvest Festival on November 8th from 10-11am (walk/run), immediately following is the Harvest Festival. It will go until 2pm and is included with your fee for the walk/run (food is extra). If you can't join us for the walk/run, come to our festival for only $7 per person. 11am-2pm.
