On Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 2 to 5 PM, Gainesville Ballet School (GBS) presents A Children’s Coppélia and Class Demonstration at Patriot High School in the new 1200-seat auditorium.
Gainesville Ballet School already performs A Children’s Nutcracker annually.
The role of Swanilda will be danced by Rachel Thompson, a graduating senior at Battlefield High School. Thompson will attend University of Notre Dame in the Fall of 2012. The role of Coppélia will be danced by Chloe Banachoski, a sixth grader at Marsteller Middle School. The cast includes both pre-professionals and professionals that will introduce audiences to the technical skill and performance repertoire of dancers in the region. Today, the school has grown to 167 students in total, and 27 ballerinas in its Youth Ballet Company. Gainesville Ballet features local talent from Bristow, Centreville, Front Royal, Gainesville, Haymarket, Manassas, South Riding, Warrenton, Winchester and surrounding areas, with a distinctive style of discipline and grace that radiates from teacher, to student, to community, and beyond.
In Part I, the Class Demonstration will delight audiences through mastery of the Vaganova syllabus for ballet class as practiced by varying levels. This method was first developed by the Russian dancer and teacher, Agrippina Vaganova, who gracefully fused elements of ballet technique from around the globe. The Vaganova method is a popular pedagogy, and has produced many of this century’s eminent dancers including Pavlova, Nijinsky, Nureyev, Baryshnikov, Makarova, and Alla Sizova. In Part II, the students of the Gainesville school will perform the ballet Coppélia as a children’s version with an emphasis on the original second act.
