Week in Preview: July 1-6, 2013

You asked for it, so it's back! Week in Preview posts aren't EVERYTHING on our calendar, they're just some highlights, including registration deadlines or ticket pickups for events we expect to go fast!  Be sure to check the "calendar" section for all the events we know about, and remember that you can list your events for FREE, just by clicking "propose an event" above the calendar.

Monday, July 1
Mondays mean Toddler Tyme at the Manassas Museum.  As we've discussed on the Facebook page before, this is really a misnomer as the program is truly aimed at preschoolers, not toddlers.  CALL AHEAD to ensure a space, and if you can't get in for this week, reserve for next! 703-368-1873

Also, be sure to mark your calendar for one day this week to check in for Summer Quest! The libraries dole out rewards weekly, as well as for meeting reading goals, so go freshen up your stack of books and check in!

Tuesday, July 2
Our pick for today is definitely the Break the Record Event at George Mason University's Field House! We even have a plan for you if you want to catch a movie, too! Dress up like a cow, enjoy some fun and food, and then head out for a show at nearby University Mall Cinemas where tickets, popcorn, and drinks area each $2 on Tuesday.

If you want to stay towards Manassas, you can catch a cheap flick there, too! Regal Cinemas has $1 movies every Tuesday and Wednesday, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Will Rogers Institute.
The Manassas Movies started June 25th, making it week two, so Tuesday will be Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and Wednesday will be Parental Guidance.

Wednesday, July 3
Good Shepherd United Methodist Church will be hosting a free story time today at 10am.  Mrs. Janae is one of my favorite people, and she's planning a story and craft/activity for preschoolers and early elementary kids.  Free, and air conditioned.

Speaking of younger kids, today is their day at Bull Run Library, which will be offering both daytime and evening sessions of building with Lego Duplo blocks, which are larger and perfect for little hands.  Check the calendar for all available sessions.

Thursday, July 4
Our list of fireworks is here, and includes the Dale City Parade, Potomac Nationals Game, and more! If you're in the Woodbridge/Dale City area, don't forget that Dale Blvd. goes down to one lane between Mapledale and Minnieville Roads starting at around 8am.  Plan to avoid that section or wait in some serious parade traffic!

Friday, July 5
Head to Leesylvania State Park at 11am for Dino Days- $2/kid or $6/family, excavate fossils, try to out-run a T-Rex, and design your own dinosaur.  Admission to the park is $4/vehicle on weekdays, so pack a picnic and plan to stay and enjoy the playground when you're done! There's also a small beach and fishing pier, as well as hiking.  Bonus- on the pier it's possible to have a foot in Maryland and another in Virginia.  Knock "be in two places at once" off your bucket list!

Chick Fil A Bristow (9939 Sowder Village Square, Manassas) will have the fire department on site from 1-3pm checking car seat installations.  If you've never done this before, it's a quick and free way to make sure your child is safe in the car!

Finally, plan ahead a little for a summer night out!  The Freedom Center in Manassas has Friday Nights out for kids 5-11, and while you're on their site, check out their one-day classes for ages 3-5.  Both require children to be signed up in advance, so take a look and mark your calendar!

Saturday, July 6
If you need a take-two on 4th of July Fun, the Workhouse will be hosting a free concert at 7pm, followed by fireworks at 8:30.  Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and enjoy!

Inside, Prince William Ice Center will have public skating from 6:30-8:30pm with $1 off admission if you wear your patriotic finest.
