My momma is a college student (so proud of her!) and is almost done with her degree, so she's amping up her job search, and my dad is on the market, too, so they both needed to update their resumes.

With social media being such a key part of the job search these days, places like LinkedIn want you to have a headshot, and neither of them had a current one.  I was really excited to be able to be somewhat helpful by setting up a gift session with Deanne from Classic portraits.  She did my head shots after I was sick (when I was informed that my headshot no longer looked like me....speaking of which, these no longer look like me- but I did enjoy rocking the short hair!)

And I think she did an amazing job on my parents, too!

Deanne is really wonderful to work with.  She's kind and has a great eye for detail, doing things like coming over to fix a stray hair or tilting your head just-so.  When she did my head shots, she stood on a ladder so I wouldn't have more than one chin....not that that's a problem I have....

Miss Rivershore One Hour Tour

            This is a one hour boat ride on the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers.  For a decent price ($6 per child from ages 4-12, 0-3 free and $12 per adult -  but they sometimes offer Groupons for 2 adults for $14, so be on the lookout for that) you get a 1 hour tour on a mostly-enclosed large pontoon boat with a bar.  As far as I could tell it's pretty much first come, first served -  no reservations needed.  However, I'd recommend scheduling in advance if you have a group.  There was a family reunion group of about 30 people assembled as we were getting ready to load and thankfully it appeared they had chartered their own boat, otherwise the rest of us would've been out of luck -  or part of their group would've been left waving on shore.

            There are vending machine-style snacks available as well as canned sodas, bottled water, beer and wine for reasonable prices ($1 for a bag of Cheetos, $2 for soda and water,  $5 for a beer and $6 for a plastic cup of wine -  we're almost on the open sea, so safety first!).

            On our tour at 4 p.m. on a Saturday in July the boat was almost at capacity at about 35 guests.  There are cushioned bench seats along both sides and plastic folding tables with plastic folding chairs down the center.  The windows were all open to allow for a bit of a breeze, but I saw a portable AC unit as well as a heater in case of extreme temperatures.  There is a very small space at the front of the boat for people to stand or sit outside.   In the back of the boat was a basic bar with the aforementioned snacks and drinks.  There was also a bathroom on board.

            Boarding took place at the four tall posts on the pier to the right of the boat loading area/kayak input at Occoquan Regional Park (located on Route 123, just over the Occoquan bridge as you're heading into Fairfax County.  If you pass the Workhouse Arts Center, you've gone too far.) .  Our first stop was to the town of Occoquan to drop off a family-  evidently there is a way you can board there as well.  Then we turned back around and took a leisurely cruise past several marinas as the captain told some of the history of the area.  It was fun going under all the bridges for I-95, Route 1 and the railroad track next to Route 1.  We also learned a little about ospreys and saw some baby ospreys in a nest on our journey.  I found it relaxing and my only complaint was that 1 hour was too short.   In a perfect world I'd love to experience this same location for a longer period of time and on a boat with more outdoor options, but for the price and the novelty of the experience, it was worth it.

National Kids To Parks Day 2013

As part of the "Let's Move" initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids, the National Park Trust is hosting National "Kids to Parks Day" on Saturday, May 18, 2013.  You can sign up on their website to let them know you pledge to take your kids outside and to a park on May 18th, and over 120,000 people have pledged so far! We have some awesome park options right here in Prince William County, including some fun, local events! Here's a list of PWC, and surrounding area, parks that have special Kids to Parks Day events on Saturday:

Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, VA - Let nature ignite your imagination! We'll read Fairy Houses by Tracy Kane and spend a day outside making fairy houses with natural materials from around the park. See if you can discover what fairies and wildlife have in common.

Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton, VA will host the Occoquan River Fest from 10am-4pm. There will also be events in the town of Occoquan from 12-5pm.

Mason Neck Park in Lorton, VA has a variety of special programs and events.  

Birding 101 (10am): Meet with a ranger on the back porch of the Visitor Center. Sit and watch the birds at the bird feeders and learn basic identification skills. Please bring your own binoculars. 

GPS Adventures (11:30am-12:30pm): Come join us on this one mile hike with park GPS units. We'll experience nature while searching for hidden caches! This program is most appropriate for ages six and up. Maximum of 10 people. First come, first served. 

Mammals of Mason Neck (2pm): Meet a ranger in the picnic area to learn about some of the local residents here in the park. Test your identification skills and learn something new about these furry park residents. 

Rockets (3pm): Come watch as we demonstrate the power of air pressure. We will be launching rockets made from 2 liter soda bottles using air, and water. Help us pump up the pressure in the bottles and guess which one will fly the farthest. 

Awesome Eagles (4pm): Meet up at the Visitor Center for an informative talk about our national emblem, the Bald Eagle. Come learn about these amazing birds and look for them as they soar along the bay.

Lake Anna State Park in Spotsylvania County (our favorite camping/boating spot!) has some special programs. 

Fishing 101 (10-11am) $2/person $6/family. Learn the basics of fishing and put it to the test! *Limited Space; Register at the Park Office*  

Orienteering 101 (1-2pm) Join a ranger and discover how to orienteer with compass and map.   

Gold Panning (3-4pm) Join Matt for a fun filled program featuring the history and basics of "Panning for Gold just like the prospectors."

The Town of Vienna - The Town of Vienna Parks and Recreation Department and Club Phoenix Teen Center proudly present “Teens on the Green” at the Vienna Town Green on May 18, 2013. The local talent will awe and amaze as we highlight three fantastically talented teen bands on two stages. The concert is free and open to the public. Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, VA has some fun programs and events scheduled.

Tyke Hike (10am-12pm): Meet at the Lost Mountain Parking Area This discovery hike is an easy walk, for children ages 4-6 and caregivers. Bring water and snacks, and wear sturdy footwear. 

Town Ball (12-2pm): Meet at the Picnic Area Play an inning or more of this historic game that evolved into our National Pastime. 

Life on the Farm: Planting a Vegetable Garden (1-3pm): Meet near the Visitor Center Help us plant our vegetable garden. All farm hands will get to take home seeds. 

Nature Journaling (2-4pm): Meet at Turner Pond Learn the basics of recording your nature observations and receive your beginner's journal. Location: Meet at Blue Ridge Trailhead

Meet The County: Supervisor Mike May, Occoquan District

In this series of posts, we'll introduce you to local decision makers and policy-changers.  The goal isn't to be political, and doesn't indicate an endorsement, but is rather to help you learn the faces and positions in Prince William County who you can go to for help, or with your concerns.  You'll notice the question is always the same, "Tell me what you love about Prince William County", and at the end of the post, you'll find a job description of the person listed.  I will not post from people during campaign season (unless it's someone who's mid-term and not currently running for re-election).  Hope this helps you know our county better!!

So tell us, Supervisor May, what do you love about Prince William County?

As a lifelong resident of northern Virginia , I believe this area is the wonderful place to live, work and play. I grew up in the Springfield area and while working for Congressman Tom Davis, I was first introduced to Prince William County . Right away I realized that this community, and Lake Ridge in particular, offered everything my wife and I desired in looking for a place to raise children.  So we decided to move here and start our family.

PWC is unique in northern Virginia in that even though it has over 400,000 residents, it still maintains a very friendly, small-town atmosphere.  To be sure, the county is urbanizing; however, as it grows, it has done a very good job of preserving its historical resources, parks and open spaces, and rural areas to the west.  As such, the county offers high end dining and retail amenities, while still giving residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors or cultural resources in their own backyard.  We are also far enough away from the "hustle and bustle" of DC and the urban core, yet close enough to be able to enjoy visiting these areas.

This dynamic gives Prince William residents the best of all worlds.  For example, my wife and I can go to a winery in Haymarket, a restaurant in Occoquan, or go hiking in Prince William Forest Park on a Saturday--all within Prince William County .  And the very next day, we can take the kids up to D.C. to visit the museums or the zoo.  In short, Prince William County  offers the best of city life, rural life, and suburban life.

In addition to the amenities, Prince William is also a safe community with great schools and friendly people.  It has so much to offer young families.  That's why I am glad that my own family has chosen to make this community our home.

Do I Live in Supervisor May's District?: The Occoquan District is home to not only the Town of Occoquan but also Lake Ridge; Westridge; and all the communities on the north side of the Prince William Parkway between its intersection with Old Bridge Road and Ellis Road , including the Davis Ford and Yates Ford corridors.

And What Does a Supervisor Do, Exactly?: Mike is the Occoquan District’s representative on the Prince William Board County Supervisors.  This is our local level of government.  The Board has oversight over all local matters, including our police and fire and rescue systems, our library system, and our local parks.  As a group, the Board sets countywide policies and approves the annual budget.  It also oversees implementation of the county’s comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance, which shape how our community grows and develops over time.  So, if you see a new office being built or construction in the area, Mike probably knows what is going on—or, if not, he can find out for you!  Mike and his staff also assist residents navigating county government with issues ranging from the permit process, real and personal property taxes, local park issues, and many more.

Occoquan Frigid February 5k Run/Walk

This 5K run/walk, on Saturday, February 23, weaves through the historic district of Occoquan, Virginia, a town founded in the middle of the 18th century along the banks of the Occoquan River. Today, the town is an eclectic mix of historic sites, and dining and shopping options. Promptly after the race, participants will be able to enjoy breakfast at one of several town casual dining establishments. Net proceeds from the event will benefit the Optimist Club of Occoquan-Woodbridge-Neabsco, which is dedicated to helping children in surrounding elementary schools. PechaKucha January 2013

PechaKucha Night is an informal community gathering where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, experiences and thoughts in a standardized format. Each presentation features 20 images, which are timed to show for 20 seconds each. Each presentation is six minutes 40 seconds long.

  

PechaKucha Nature Night is this Saturday, Jan.26. Doors open at 6:00 PM (dinner), and the program begins at 7:30 pm at The Electric Palm (12745 Sea Ray Lane, Woodbridge). Happy Back-to-Normal Day! (Waking up with no cute Mother's Day cards shoved in your face is always such a let down on Monday morning!) I hope that you all had wonderful weekends!

For those of you that are new to PwcMoms, on Mondays I try to do a little preview of the week.  These are just events that I decide to feature, but there are tons more by clicking "Calendar" at the top of the page.  Also, check out the Event Map button, too, for a google map of the day's activities and even driving directions, if you need them!

Monday

At 12pm, Chinn Library hosts their lunch bunch.  Bring a bagged lunch and listen to stories in the library's community room.  We've been to this event a few times and we always enjoy listening.  You'll be eating on the floor, so crackers and cheese and grapes is a better idea than anything requiring silverware. 

Also, in case you missed it over the weekend, we've got some amazing giveaways going on right now! First, enter to win a Bugaboo Cameleon Stroller from Baby Blossom (don't need a stroller? Why not try to win for a friend!).  This contest is one entry only, but you can enter at any of 4 participating sites.

Tuesday

LLL of Woodbridge lost their normal meeting space and so this week, they will meet at Chinn Library.  The time is the same, but please be sure to note the location change!! 

Tuesday evening, our friends from Group Therapy Associates will be hosting two classes at Sport and Health Gainesville.  You can register for these free classes (which come with a bonus 30 day membership!) at eventbrite here:  Play Your Way To Fitness or Happier Healthier You.  I think the "Play Your Way to Fitness" class sounds especially perfect for anyone with small children, but both should be fantastic!

Tuesday is also a huge day for Kids Eat Free.  Don't forget I've got a list of Kids Eat Free options, and I'm happy to add any I'm missing! Just leave a comment! 

Wednesday

At 10:30 am, if you've got a preschooler you're going to want to be at Chinn Library for a very special fire safety stour hour with a bonus visit from PWC Fire and Rescue (and their TRUCKS!).

Also, Central Library has an Animal Farm event coming up on the 23rd, and free tickets are available beginning today.  Free tickets for these types of events always go quickly, so be sure to swing by! 

Need an indoor option? Novak's Gymnastics has open gym at 10:45 and your first visit is free.  After that it's just $5. 

Thursday

From 10am-11am it's Kidgits week at Potomac Mills Mall! You can sign up for $5 and get special gifts each month, or just show up for the entertainment.

Bull Run Library's American Girls Book Club is tonight at 7pm.  You must preregister, though, so be sure to call ahead!

Friday

From 6-9pm the JCC of DC will have a special family shabbat.  This isn't PWC, but if your family is Jewish, this sounds like a really neat event! (PS- if you go, I'm not responsible for your kids wanting to dye their hair multicolored!)

Of course, Friday night is always a hit for kids night out at Jumping Jimmy's or Kids N Motion, but be sure to register in advance for these, too, as your date night won't happen if they don't have enough kids registered by Wednesday! 

Saturday

There will be a health and fitness fair at Pfitzner Stadium from 10am-4pm.  We're told there will be rock climbing, a petting zoo, coloring, BMX demonstrations and more.  

Saturday is National Kids to Parks Day.  All VA State Parks will have a celebration of some kind, so pick your favorite and head out! Featured on our calendar is one at Occoquan Regional Park with hiking, kayaking and fitness information! 

Sunday

Sunday is Farmer's Market day at our house, but if you're looking for a few inside options, the Riverside Dinner Theatre in Fredericksburg is showing Seussical for their Kid's Matinee!

Ballet Fans? Manassas Ballet Theatre will be presenting Swan Lake at 7:30pm. 

Healthy Paddles at Occoquan Regional Park

Kick off a healthy summer on May 19th 2012 from 10am-3pm at Occoquan Regional Park.  There'll be a paddle, hike, and health fair! Kid-friendly, family-oriented, sounds like a winner!

Japanese Art and Culture Day at the Workhouse

The Workhouse will be having a special Japanese Culture day! You can find their full schedule on their website, but I'm including descriptions just for the kid friendly events that will be taking place.

Darlene's tea presentation will cover tea processing, how to prepare the teas, where they are from, the difference between each tea, and  the many health benefits. Participants will be able to taste the teas and purchase their favorites to take home (participatory).

Potomac Nationals Giveaway #1

We love love love having the Potomac Nationals practically in our backyard, and with opening weekend coming up THIS WEEKEND, I want to share some details with you!

 I want to admit right up front that I absolutely LOATHE watching baseball on TV, but I love a game in person! It's so much fun to get the family out and cheer from the grandstand! I am a total sucker for the wave, and I want it to go as long as possible.  Yeah, I'm that person doing it one more time than everyone else.  So what?

We take our whole family to the 4th of July game (hint: buy your tickets NOW) every year.  We even met a preschool teacher that way! They've got a great game followed by an awesome fireworks show.  Doesn't get any more American than that!  I also love that the stadium is now non-smoking in all seated sections.  (When I was little, you had to reserve early to get in the "family section" for that!)

My kids think Uncle Slam is just about the coolest thing on the planet.  I haven't figured this out yet.  That little blonde guy? I have absolutely ZERO pictures of him with the Easter Bunny (and he loves bunnies) because he thinks the Bunny is terrifying.  Uncle Slam? AWESOME.  Your individual results with that may vary, but it works for us!

Summer Camps 2012

Last year I spent a ton of time making the Park Authority Camps easier to search and sort through.  This year, they've done a way better job than I ever could- check out their website where you can search, compare, etc, or pick up a "Summer Camp Guide" which is listed by location by date this year, rather than by topic like last year!! Great job Park Authority!! 


Urban Evolution will be hosting camps from June 11th-September 7th.  They describe them: "So your 9-year-old likes to turn your living room into the set of Wild and Crazy Kids and observing them in the backyard is like watching a scene from Legends of the Hidden Temple? THIS is the camp for your child! The day camps serve as a safe and exciting introduction to Parkour and Freerunning.  Don's know what Parkour is, pizza brain? It's getting over, around, and through obstacles to enhance physical fitness and mental preparedness.  Your kids will also be exposed to movement-based sports like gymnastics, tricking, breakdancing, and Capoeira (Brazilian Martial Arts).  Think Guts on steroids.  And, at 75% off, this challenge is better than entering the Temple of Doom.  


YOUTH SPORTS, Virginia Training Center ’s Summer Camp Program gives kids of all gymnastics backgrounds and ages a chance to develop new skills, make new friends and above all have loads of fun!  Gymnastics Camp is open to kids ages 5 - 15.   The kids will participate in gymnastics, jump rope, arts and crafts, swimming, putt-putt golf, movies and more. A weekly schedule will be handed out on the first day of each week of camp.  Gymnastics camp is offered weekly.  Some weeks feature a second, specialty camp, too.   half day ($140) or full day ($190) 


Edgemoor Art Studio offers 8 weeks of "Art Rocks" Art camp for all ages.  Days are divided with younger children in the morning and older kids in the afternoon.  All supplies and snacks are included.


The Little Gym of Gainesville offers a full summer of programming with a different theme each week.  Classes are for ages 3-8 years old, and are priced by the day, rather than by the week, making it a good flexible option for part-time parents. 


The State Park Program offers a teen training program that actually includes a $500 stipend!  Have older kids? Check it out on their website.


George Mason University's "Potomac Arts Academy" offers several options throughout the summer for ages through high school.  


Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation will offer camp all summer beginning Monday June 25.  Full day is 8:30 to 4:30, and half day is 8:30 to 12:30.  Registration begins March 1st.  Camps range in price from $80 to $175 a week depending on the number of hours and whether or not you are a LRPRA member.  Contact the Recreation Dept., (703) 491-2154 for details.


Gymboree Bubble Camp- Every Friday. Get the fun of camp without the daily commitment! Bubble Camp is a drop-off program for “potty independent” 3-5 year olds which offers Play, Music, Art, Sports, School Skills, parachute time, traditional games and signature Gymboree activities all in one day!  Camp is every Friday in June, July and August from 9AM-3PM. The cost is $35 and includes snack and lunch.  Call or email for weekly themes and reservations. 


LRPRA Summer Camp begins Monday, June 25th.  Full Day Camp is from 8:30am-4:30pm, half day camp is 8:30am-12:30pm.  Registration begins March 1st.  Non-refundable deposit of $25/week due at registration.  703-491-2154.  Member and Non-Member rates, multi week discount, prices start at $160/$80 (member full/half day) and $175/$90 (non-member full/half day).


Swim Kids offers weeklong sessions all summer for $99 per week.  It's 5 classes per week, leaving plenty of time for other activities. 

Next Level Fitness and Performance, the area's top athletic performance facility, is offering Athletic Performance Training for serious and aspiring athletes who want to become faster, stronger, and more confident athletes. Located in Haymarket, sessions are offered for collegiate athletes, high school athletes (ages 15-18), middle school athletes (ages 11-14), and young athletes (ages 7-10). Taught by professional performance trainers, athletes will improve their running technique, agility and first step quickness, gain power, flexibility and endurance, increase core and overall body strength, and develop linear and multi-directional speed. St. Paul UMC Preschool will be hosting camps all summer long for ages 2.5-5 on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday from 9am-12pm.

Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center is having three equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) camps that focus on a broad range and combination of challenges facing pre-teens and teens. All activities are based in groundwork distinguishing these classes from our traditional therapeutic riding classes. EAP includes a vast array of treatment strategies utilizing the horse. Considerable success has been observed in the mental health realm with horse activities on the ground.Groundwork classes develop cognitive skills, sensory skills, and confidence. Cognitive sessions address the many processes of the mind, including planning, judgment, memory, orientation, concepts, attention and language.Sensory processing sessions provide activities working with the horse to improve the brain’s ability to take in, analyze and respond to information from the body’s five senses. The primary goals of these sessions are increased body awareness, sequencing and judgment skills, attention span, cause and effect, motor coordination, spatial awareness, and early learning skills.

In addition, clients improve judgment skills, social interaction, coordination, motor planning, self confidence and self-esteem, and a greater sense of independence.

“On the Home Front” Camp

This camp will include activities associated with the various periods of history at Brentsville. Children will conduct a historic mock trial in the 1822 Courthouse, cook a snack, create historic crafts in the ca.1850 Haislip Farm House, learn about a school day in the one-room schoolhouse, and engage with nature with a hike to identify animals and plants along Brentsville Nature Trail. 9am-Noon daily.

FRC First Robotics Camp for rising 10th-12th graders, this TWO WEEK camp is designed to introduce experienced robotics students to competition.  This is a large-scale robotics program which involves the use of peer tools and other equipment.  Students will work in groups of 4-6.  Robotics Coach recommendation required.  2-3 years of robotics experience is preferred.  Competition the 2nd Friday 8am-2pm, bring a bag lunch Monday-Friday the first week and Monday-Thursday the 2nd week.  $455 includes camp, t-shirt and pizza lunch the 2nd Friday.  July 30-August 10th Patriot High School.
