We were so excited to be invited to visit Bush Gardens Williamsburg for their Christmas Town festivities! We were offered opening day tickets- which ended up being very well attended. It was Friday, November 27, which was also my eldest son's 12th birthday, so we were excited to spend his special day at the park!

Driving down was a bit of an adventure because our GPS program decided we needed to do a scenic detour around William and Mary. It was also the day after Thanksgiving so we sat in a little traffic. Be ye not so dumb and don't go on an awful traffic day.
We printed our tickets out before we arrived, which ended up being a HUGE timesaver. We got to skip the will-call and purchase lines and go straight to the gates. Note that there is a bag check involved in the process. We did bring backpacks, though, because while we lucked out and got a fantastic day weather-wise, we knew it'd get cold as soon as the sun went down!
When we first entered the park around 3pm, it was very....cozy.
But by the time evening rolled around, most of the people had left for the day. The Festhaus was so busy they were on a total standstill in the line, so I suggest booking your dinner time, but after dinner, there were really very few people- my boys rode Alpengheist three times in a row! Even at its busiest, we didn't wait terribly long for rides, which is what my boys were in it for. Usually 2-3 cycles of a ride and we were in.
The lights were AMAZING. Seeing them in the daylight you realize there are a lot of them, but when they start going on it's just incredible.
The lights on the Festhaus dance to music- which is just beyond. I highly recommend doing one of the "people mover" options- either the train or the sky ride- to just sit back and enjoy the lights around the park. We brought my mom with us, and she's got some serious fear of heights, so we went with the train. It was just amazing to see all the gorgeous lights!! On foot, one of our favorites was the bridge where they are playing "Let There Be Peace on Earth" with a light display above the water that reflects back up. It was just charming.
We spent from 3pm until 10pm at the park, and we honestly did not get to do 1/2 of what we could have done. There's so much to experience and the kids had a blast. My kids are definitely daredevils and wanted to ride everything they could. Not all of the rides are open, so they were able to focus on what they really wanted to get to. If you're going, be sure to check out the Busch Gardens website- they've actually created plans for you to get around the park and focus on what's most important to your family.
There's so much I could tell you about this event. It's the SAME PRICE as another Christmas event in our area, which you will not spend half as much time at. It's absolutely gorgeous. I definitely had a great time, and so did my kids. Let me tell you about my two favorite things, and then I'll just leave you with some pictures:
1- The North Pole
Holy heck you guys, the North Pole. Looking in the large window at Santa meeting with children while the "snow" falls around you? Stop it. It's magical and I don't even like Santa. Most of the bloggers I've read recommend you go to see Santa ASAP, but honestly, even if the wait is longer I wouldn't go until the North Pole is fully lit up because it is just incredibly breathtaking to walk around the corner into the Christmas lights and have that full experience.
2- Twas the Night
There are several shows that you can see while you're at Christmas Town. We only got to one, and honestly, I'm pretty sure it was the one to see. Twas the Night is an on-ice spectacular based on the classic poem Twas the Night Before Christmas. The ice is small, but they use it incredibly well. My daughter was amazed by Santa "really going down the chimney!" The skaters are all talented, the costumes are beautiful- we loved everything about it. We ended our night with this show and then grabbed the last train out of New France back to the gates in England, and it was a perfect way to end our evening.
I would most definitely recommend Christmas Town. We had an amazing time and I only wish we'd had a longer day to spend at the park! I think it would be great if there were more roller coasters open for the older kids, and depending on the weather I think you could have more or less fun, but if you're looking for a Christmas event, this is the one I'd go for. My iPhone pictures really don't do the lights justice!

MinecraftEDU- Traveling into the Future
Join us in an apocalyptic future, one where the earth
has been ravaged by a series of natural disasters. Each day, students rely on
the engineering design process to solve a series of challenges such as
building a city on a series of islands, escaping from a bunker on Mt. Everest
and even building a rocket to land on the moon! Through the application of
engineering principles, students solve numerous challenges as they make their
virtual world of Minecraft a safe place for humanity once again.
Robotics101-
During Robotics 101 program, students will learn the
basics of designing, programming, and controlling a fully functional robot.
Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS®, mathematical concepts, and engineering principles
students will brainstorm, plan, test, and modify sequences of instructions to
accomplish a given task. Students will also learn the sequence of
communication between the robot, and the programmer by collecting and
analyzing data using the robot's sensors.
Frosty Framework-
Students will construct a gingerbread house in order to
gain an understanding of structural properties in architecture, as well as
the properties of different materials used in building construction.
Electronic Game Design: Bug Invasion Games
Eek! The bugs are after our birthday cake!! In
Electronic Game Design: Bug Invasion, we will create our own version of an
invader defense game that is set in a home where we have to defend our
birthday cake from an infestation of ravenous bugs! We will use the
Engineering Design Process to create a storyboard to outline the rules of
play and characters for our game. Then, we will use Clickteam Fusion 2.5® to
bring our storyboard to life with programming. At the end of the class,
everyone takes home a working Windows-compatible game (Clickteam Fusion 2.5®
does not support Mac or Android operating systems).
Electrical Engineering- Electrified
During the Electrical Engineering classes, students use
the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine basic
electronics and circuits. Students experiment with Snap Circuits® to discover
the capabilities of major electronic components. In addition, students build
their own flashlights and explore the world of magnetic energy by building
their own Magnetic Levitation vehicle.
Here's the reality of visiting Santa at the mall. Are you ready? It's not really mind-blowing, but it's the most important thing to know:
You're going to wait in line.
Yup. That's right. And, if your kids are anything like, most kids, they could easily move from the "nice list" to the "naughty list" in the time it takes to go from the entry elf to the big guy in red.
The nicest part of Santa HQ, for me, is that they understand this reality. Instead of winding your way through endless miles of rope partitions, you get to wind your way through various rooms with different entertainment features.
This is my 7 year old, and her response is the one you want to worry about. We've always been very honest about our views on Santa, which you can feel however you want about, but she likes him anyway.
So, here's Santa HQ:
When you first enter, you get to check to make sure that you're not wasting your time. I mean, who'd want to get all the way to Santa only to find out they were actually on the naughty list?
Here's the Naughty or Nice O'Meter. Children step up, enter their name, and then stand on the footprints to get a reading on how naughty or nice they are. Spoiler alert, I'm pretty sure everyone is nice ;) Here's Savannah's reading:

Next, you pass through a brief outdoor section lined with Christmas trees. This is a good time to take pictures of your children pretending to be reindeer.
Excellent. Next, we're onto the HGTV living room, where you can create and email yourself an Elf video, sit on the sofa and relax, and enjoy the overall holiday ambiance.
Next you enter a control room, which has some really cool interactive features that a crew member will help you see using special tablets. My kids were a little too old to want to play much with the control panel, but they did enjoy the fact that they thought it was making "TARDIS sounds" and were joking about Santa being an incarnation of the Doctor.

Finally, you get to Santa. I can't show you a picture from that because cell phones are verboten, but the santa is quite good. Our pictures were par for the course for a mall kiosk picture, and because we were there on a day with a school full of radio winners I just got the first image, not to pick. We actually have some cute images on our online file and I might order one of them :)

Winter Break is officially over, but the winter season will likely provide a few more mini-breaks before spring arrives. Last year, Prince William County Public Schools lost 13 days to snow--almost 3 weeks of instruction time. Although snow days can provide a welcomed break from the normal routine for parents, students, and teachers, they can also provide boundless opportunities for intentional conversation and learning at home.
A good example of the impact even trivial communication moments have on little listeners is a conversation Mrs. Cole recently had with a kindergarten student. The young lady informed Mrs. Cole that she would soon be attending “Reading Workshop” (an after-school reading enrichment program) on Mondays, instead of her normal Thursday time. Mrs. Cole hadn’t heard anything from the parents regarding the change, but, based on her experience with the student and her family, Mrs. Cole knew this information was something that the girl’s parents had communicated with her and the young student remembered.
While that example of a young student’s attention to and retention of information shared in conversation may seem minute, it goes to show how responsible and responsive our younger learners can be when provided the opportunity. Often times, questions asked to kindergartners regarding real-life matters are met with shrugs and “I don’t know.” This response is not because our children are too simple or young to be aware, but simply because parents don’t often communicate with them regarding what they consider to be irrelevant topics for children.
The difference between students who are included in higher-level discussion at home and those who are not becomes evident in classroom discussion and learning time, where a distinction emerges between which students are having things explained to them and which ones are simply having things done for them. The simple act of regular and intentional dialogue with a kindergartner can permit high-level return in the classroom. While, understandably, parent work schedules contribute to a lack of time for intentional communication, snow days can provide a convenient opportunity to have purposeful family interaction time.
While even kindergartners are as tempted to attach themselves to their electronics as we prove to be, days off from school, prompted by winter weather, can be full of personal interaction & conversational learning for our students. These mini-breaks are a wonderful opportunity to intentionally focus on strengthening your young child’s communication skills by including them in every-day discussion. Use the together-time to help your learner build towards a successful second half of the year and beyond!
As teachers of a younger audience, we package our learning objectives into fun and interactive lessons in order to engage kindergartners. While electronics and technology may rule our day, there is still opportunity to be creative in how you engage your kindergartner on snow days. The right kind of game can help him/her strengthen foundational skills, such as following directions, pre-reading (making a guess about topic based on pictures, clues, etc) and working together. Below is an explanation of three great offline, or non-electronic, activities that can help your kindergartner build a solid learning foundation for 2015.
Indoor Games:
Brain Games are an example of activities that can help exercise and develop memory. Additionally, parentfurther.com has a list of information processing activities that are worth considering, including the 30 Second Spotlight game, in which participants pick a family related topic, take turns, and talk about the topic for 30 seconds of uninterrupted time. This game is a great one for your student because it aims to help your kindergartner strengthen his/her listening and responding skills.
If you are already using games as a learning tool, be encouraged that your efforts are foundational. Continue to establish such routine interactions with your kindergartner during snow days and add additional games to work on new skills.
Snow is fun to play with, but can also be fun to learn with. Sledding, snow-ball fights, and snow man/fort building are all fun activities during snow days. Author Jean Warren shares on preschoolexpress.com that snow, as a learning material, presents the opportunity for children to work on Thinking skills, Coordination Skills, Art Skills, Math Skills, Music Skills, Language Skills, Science Skills and Concept Skills. With a little intentionality, you can turn those and other activities into unique learning opportunities.
One example of a specific, fun snow activity that Jean Warren recommends is “Rolling and Throwing,” as explained below.
ROLLING AND THROWING
Children naturally love to roll snow into large balls and throw smaller snowballs. Encourage rolling and throwing. Both of these activities help your child develop their coordination skills. Instead of throwing balls at people, help your child set up a row of plastic bottles to knock over or a tire to throw through.
The third important opportunity we highly encourage you to take advantage of is providing times for experimenting. One of those things very obvious in the classroom is the difference between students who are not allowed to experiment, for parental fear of inaccuracy, and those who are challenged to develop independence and find a way to do things on their own.
A practical example of how student experimenting provides advancements in independent thinking comes from a summer camp situation. During those days filled with heat, we like to offer the students a treat of ice cream in little cups that usually have wooden spoons attached for convenient scooping. However, one time, the wooden spoons were not included with the ice cream cups. We had kindergartners begin to cry because they could not figure out how to eat the ice cream without the little spoons. This presented an opportunity for the kindergartners to problem solve and use reasoning skills to figure out how to eat the ice cream without the relied-upon spoon. We began to experiment with the students to figure out (non-messy) ways to eat the ice cream, like taking the time to lick the ice cream, squeezing the cup to get the ice cream out, or folding up the lid to make it into a spoon in order to scoop the ice cream out. While exercises in experimenting open doors to less than perfect results, they establish skills in solving problems, encouraging creativity, and rewarding diligence.
Take time during the snow days to experiment and create opportunities for your young student to practice problem solving and reasoning skills. Intentionally create scenarios in which normal tools are not available to accomplish a task and guide your child toward figuring out how to overcome the challenge faced.
All of the above-mentioned opportunities, and others like them, can not only create new, important life-skills for your young student, but they can also serve the double benefit of building their self-esteem and sense of security. Engaging your kindergartner in any of these simple, offline activities will allow your student to more fully and effectively engage in the classroom, more prepared to learn and grow during the second half of the school year.
