We are excited to announce the NEW event Heroes, Helpers & Hotdogs and it's open to the entire community.

The event will showcase many Heroes and Helpers with a "touch a truck" area, live demonstrations, and many interactive booths and activities. In addition, there will be hotdog lunches for sale, as well as concessions and snow cones. There is a $5 suggested donation upon entry.

Tips for a Happy, Healthy Easter

Easter is almost here! As an adult, I look forward to our family’s traditions that surround the holiday. When I was a child, I looked forward to many of those same traditions, but my main focus was centered around one common theme: Easter candy! Between school celebrations, a visit from the Easter Bunny, egg hunts, and family celebrations, I was practically swimming in jelly beans, marshmallow chicks, and chocolate bunnies by the end of the Easter weekend.

As a health-conscious parent in today’s over-commercialized world, trying to maintain a healthy balance can be especially challenging around the holidays. It seems like everything is centered around candy, and lots of it. I have found that the best solution for our family is to allow our children to enjoy the celebrations outside of our home (class parties, community events, etc.) at their own discretion, and try to make our home and family celebrations centered around more meaningful things, like having fun together!

With a little planning, you can help create a happy AND healthy Easter for your family. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1.     Choose a Healthier Theme for Easter Baskets. Chances are, your kids are going to get plenty of Easter candy between school, community, and family celebrations. Instead of focusing on filling their baskets up with candy, pick a healthier theme that appeals to your child’s interests or upcoming events. In years past, we have done a Sports theme, a Beach theme, a Garden theme, an Art theme, and a Rainy Day theme. My kids look forward to seeing what the new theme will be each year!

2.     Mix Up the Egg Hunt. Who says that all of the plastic eggs have to be filled with candy? Mix things up a bit. The anticipation of “What will be in the next egg?” makes the egg hunting even more fun. Fill some of the eggs with trinkets, money (always a BIG hit), or family fun “passes” (family movie night, stay up 30 minutes past your bedtime, a trip to the zoo, etc.). You can even turn your egg hunt into a scavenger hunt by filling each egg with a different clue leading everyone to a final prize or destination.

3.     Play with Your Food. Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring. That’s what Pinterest is for, my friends! With a little creativity, you can create an Easter spread that is healthy and visually appealing to your children. Better yet, let your kids play with their food to come up with their own healthy Easter creations.

4.     Enjoy the Holiday. At the end of the day, holidays are meant to be joyful celebrations that bring family and friends together. Don’t stress over the little things. Instead, try to find a healthy balance that works for your family and then focus on enjoying the moments and time shared with those that bring the most love and joy to your life.

Previous St. Patrick's Day Shenanigans I Have Had

This year I've been a little preoccupied with Silver Sparkles and I haven't done anything fun, but if you're still looking for some St. Patty's ideas, here's what I've got in the "blast from the past" department.

1) Leprechaun Room Raid (2012)
"We're neither Irish, nor Catholic, but Logan's favorite color is green and Riley spent all his free time building "Leprechaun Traps" after being jealous about the treats and mischief at Savannah's preschool.  I decided (at 12 am, which is when my best inspiration always strikes) that I'd go with it, so, here's what I did.  The leprechaun mischief:  This involved a skein of yarn, some tape, and a package of green balloons.  Luckily the kids are having a "sleepover" together tonight, so I only had to sneak around one room!!  In the kitchen I drew a picture and threw down some glitter.  I have 0 artistic skill, I know, so no laughing at my leprechaun!! Also on the table are goody bags for the kids.  Each kid got a shirt, bracelet, 7 Up, crayons, gum, granola bar, lollipop, and jello.  The boys have flat green shirts and green "lucky" bracelets."

2. Rice Krispies Treats Shamrocks (2010) 

(Did you know that you can dye your rice krispies treats any color you want by adding food coloring to the melted marshmallow goo? You can. You can also cut them and frost them to look like clovers. With decorator sugar. FYI.)

3. Teacher Gifts (2010) 

"These are a little more involved, but we did them over two days. So, here goes. First the supplies. You will need to assemble some glue, glitter, a terra cotta pot, your green scrapbooking paper scraps, scissors, bamboo skewers, a green crayon, tape, floral foam, small brads and ribbon. o, first things first, paint a line of glue around the top edge or rim of your pot and roll it in glitter. We put our floral foam inside first. Also, if you've never tried Martha Stewart's glitter- you totally should. So, next, paint a little glue on your floral foam (or sqeeze it out, whatever floats your boat) and let your baby cut up a ton of ribbon to be grass. We also added some confetti. That's optional :) So now we have a glittery pot of grass! Hooray! Next, cut up your scrap papers into hearts. You'll need 4 as far as I'm concerned, per 4 leaf clover. Savannah preferred 3 and Logan enjoyed 5. But I say 4. Either way, it was a good way to practice counting to whatever number. Line them up in circular formation, and attach them one at a time with the brad. We also had a little circle plastic embellishment that came in our brads. I had run out of green by the time I decided to take this picture, so there's an orange one. True story, the flag of Ireland is Green, Orange, and White. I'm an unintentional GENIUS ;) Fabulous! Now, peel your crayon a little so that you can use it on the side and color the skewers green. I'll wait. Done? Excellent. So, now you'll want to either glue or tape them to the back of your shamrock. I'm not very patient, so we prefer tape. Once you've assembled them, stick them into your floral foam. At the end, we add a square piece of paper to a skewer and write "I'm so lucky you're my teacher" and the child's name. Or, in Savannah's case, Coach, since she has a swim coach, but no teachers yet. :) Although this would be cute for a Sunday School teacher, too, no? People tend to forget them, and they need love, too!"

4. Limericks and Graphing Marshmallow Lucky Charms (2015) 
I should note that as the kids get older (and by kids, I mean "the boys") things get less cute at my house.  This "adorable" Limerick exercise ended up being about a dead guy.  Thank you 5th grade boys.

We also graphed Lucky Charms.  I made them glue them down and told them they couldn't eat them (I had extras as a treat) but the boys ended up licking theirs after they were glued down to show me who's boss.  Thanks, again, Y chromosome!

Many of the finest local aerobatic performers are coming to the Annual Air Show and Open House at Manassas Regional Airport in 2015. You’ll see some of the top aerobatic pilots and teams! Everyone with the Manassas Airshow is passionate about aviation and airshow entertainment. Our goal is to inspire you and the future aviators of tomorrow with safe, top quality, family friendly entertainment. The Manassas Airshow and Open House will present a wide variety of Displays and Attractions for the entire family to enjoy including the Freedom Museum based at the airport!

The thrust of the exhibit is the 20th Century – the American century. What you will see is a time line on which the stories of our local heroes are told. Many of the exhibits are artifacts and source documents donated by our local citizens. You will see the Norton Bomb Sight, military art, and the story of combat as told by the participants. Don’t miss the Local Heroes Memorial recognizing all of the men and women from Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William County who died in all of the wars from WW I to present. You will come away with a new feeling of profound respect and admiration, for the sacrifice of families in our community.

EAA Chapter 186 – Aircraft Display
As part of the airshow, EAA Chapter 186 will be displaying a variety of member-owned aircraft. These aircraft will consist of Certified airplanes (such as Cessna, Piper, Beech) as well as homebuilt airplanes. Some of the homebuilt airplanes were built by their owners and some were purchased from the builder. One owner will be bringing his partially completed RV12 kit built aircraft. Kit-built or Experimental aircraft are similar to plastic model airplanes you built when you were young. Only when you are done with these kits, you can fly in them!

People unfamiliar with amateur-built aircraft are sometimes put off by the term “experimental”, as it can conjure up an image of something less than a “real” aircraft, or something that’s unproven. But that is not the case– “experimental” merely mean that the aircraft isn’t mass-produced in a factory. In addition, all experimental aircraft must be registered with the FAA and pass a stringent airworthiness inspection conducted either by the FAA. The plane MUST pass this inspection before it can be issued an airworthiness certificate and legally fly.

All aircraft owners will be around their airplanes and able to answer questions about them as well as letting you sit in them and see how the flight controls work. Come see the wide variety of aircraft that your neighbors own.

Military Re-enacters and Displays
Re-enactor volunteers representing different times of war will be attending show. Many authentic items will be on display including: Vehicles, Uniforms, Machine Guns, Mortars, Anti Aircraft, weapons of all kind, camps with supplies and various gear of war.

On display will be U.S., British, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Canadian. You will be able to touch a real MG, climb into a vintage tent and talk with subject expert Re-enactors.

July 11 - Composting - Learn how to make “black gold” by turning  grass, leaves and clippings into dark brown, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner.  Compost also holds moisture and nutrients for the garden so flowers and vegetables are more beautiful and abundant. Join Joe and the Master Gardener Compost team for the full story on compost.  Starting Fall Vegetable Garden – Now is the time to plan to have fall salad greens and sweet root crops growing for weeks beyond the first frost. Get tips from Cooks’ Garden Master Gardener Volunteers to help you extend your vegetable season long beyond the heat of summer.

August 8 - What’s that Weed?  Get help for identifying those troublesome weeds in your lawn and garden.  Sniff your way through the Fragrance garden with wise, Ruth Johnston as she shares wisdom and  experiences with plant selection and care in this beautiful garden bed. 

September 12 - Fall chores in the garden – Join Master Gardener Volunteers as they prepare for fall and winter in the garden.  Topics for discussion include clean up, plant division, soil preparation.  Fall Cover Crops in the Cooks Garden –  Cover crops protect soil from erosion and enhance soil productivity and health, yielding better vegetables.  Cooks’ Garden Master Gardeners show you how.  MGPW Plant Sale – Add some new plants to your fall garden! October 10 - Living Soil - Healthy soil is a web, retaining and cycling nutrients into the right forms at the right rates, building soil structure, suppressing disease-causing organisms, protecting plants, and decomposing toxic compounds. Learn about the necessary elements of a healthy soil web.  Join the Cooks’ Garden team and learn seed saving tips. 

Hayfield Comic Con

Hayfield Comic Con is coming!
Hayfield Comic Con, Hayfield Secondary School’s first ever comic convention and fundraiser, is coming this April 11th from 10 AM- 4 PM. Hayfield Comic Con, which will support and be supported by the combined after school program “Club Orange”, will provide a learning experience for student artists, as well as activities for everyone to enjoy.
Building off of the years of convention experience from the show organizers, Hayfield Comic Con will provide attendees with an authentic convention feel that has something for everyone, be they new to conventions or old fans. Attendees will be able to participate in a Cosplay Contest, meet with student and professional artists, attend panels about a variety of topics, and take pictures in the “Cosplayground”. And, best yet, admission is FREE!
The con will also introduce an event called the “Epic Loot Table”. This table, run by Hayfield high schoolers, will be the heartbeat of the con. This table will run the “Club Orange Raffle”, giving people the opportunity to buy raffle tickets to win a variety of sci- fi, fantasy, gaming and comic prizes. This table will also be where people can participate in the “CONquest”, a convention hall scavenger hunt to win even more raffle tickets. All proceeds from the raffle will go towards funding “Club Orange” for the rest of the school year.
Held inside Hayfield Secondary School’s two cafeterias, with student volunteers, as well as free tables for Hayfield Students, it promises to be a convention like no other. It is the hope of Hayfield Club Orange to bring a love of art, comics, and video games to the Northern Virginia area, as well as provide a place for people to have fun being themselves amongst other fans.

Wreck-It Week (Morning, Classroom 1)

Smash!  Crash!  BOOM!  Students in this camp will join Wrecking Companies for the week and will attempt to work their way up the ranks of their company from Intern to President.  They will compete against other wrecking companies in various engineering-related challenges, such as building a bridge from balsawood and constructing safety mechanisms to protect a raw egg from impact.  Put on your hard hats and safety goggles and join the fun!

Minecraft: Traveling into the Future (Morning, Classroom 2)

Join us in an apocalyptic future, one where the earth has been ravaged by a series of natural disasters. Each day, students rely on the engineering design process to solve a series of challenges such as building a city on a series of islands, escaping from a bunker on Mt. Everest, and even building a rocket to land on the moon!  Through application of engineering principles, students solve numerous challenges as they make their virtual world of Minecraft a safe place for humanity once again.  

The Engineering of Cities (Afternoon, Classroom 1)

Do you have what it takes to engineer a city from the ground up? Students will work together as a construction crew to design and build magnificent cities from nothing but a little engineering and their own imagination. Crews design essential urban structures and solve real-world challenges, such as developing a process to purify water and generate electricity. Sign up to help your crew build the best city in town!

We are offering Spring Break Camp the week of Monday, March 30^th- Friday, April 3^rd, during this time the children will be introduced to some of the fun themes we have planned for our 2015 Summer Camp. What a wonderful way to get ready for SUMMER!  
“GONE CAMPING!”  On this day we will make s’mores, build a camp fire, use fishing poles, build tents, and so much more that the great outdoors bring us!!
“CONCOCTIONS GALORE!” On this day we will do experiments, discovery and creativity is what this day is all about.  Children will learn about the amazing world of science!!
“ENCHANTED FOREST!” On this day we will venture together into an enchanted forest where unicorns still exist and the tree fairies fly.  We’ll be on the look-out for trolls and giant ogres as we follow the path that leads us back home!! 
“OUTER SPACE!” On this day we will explore the wonders of space! Experiments and imagination will play a key role in this exciting day.  So let’s get into our rockets and BLAST OFF!!
“PIRATES & VILLAINS” Ahoy there mateys. On this day we will set sail on the open sea in search of the “buried” treasure hidden.  We’ll get your eye patch ready and your bandannas pulled tight as we follow the map that leads to the gold!!
