Week in Preview: October 7th-October 14th, 2013

We have our first confusing holiday coming up! Columbus Day is NOT observed by PWCS, but some preschools take the day off, and if you're a teacher in FCPS, I hear you get the day off.  Be sure to check your educational calendar for details on that.  Note, however, that PWC Libraries ARE closed.

10/10 at 6:45pm- What keeps you awake at night when you think about college for your children? We will discuss why every family MUST file for Financial Aid, The pros and cons of various college savings programs,School selection; is Public REALLY less expensive than Private? The Truth about Merit and Athletic Scholarships, and so much more! Please join us for this complimentary and educational workshop designed for parents of HS age college bound students. On the 11th, the Weems Botts Museum will offer Haunted Tours- space is extremely limited and reservations are required for both the Haunted Heights Ghost Walk and the Haunted Museum Lock-in. Ghost Walks are $8 each Adult, $5 for students and free for children under age 6. Lock-ins are $75 per person and payment must be received within 7 days of making your reservations. 

October 15th- Learn what a variety of musical instruments sound like, the size and scale of the various instruments, how to assemble, clean and maintain each instrument properly, and what it takes to play them. This program will help adults and children learn to choose the instrument that is the right fit for them. The presentation will be followed by a short question and answer period. Parents and the children who attend this showcase will walk away from it with greater knowledge about the various instruments they are choosing between and will have a better grasp of how to truly succeed at the instrument of their choice. This is a free program. Registration, beginning September 1st, is encouraged and registered patrons will have first priority to attend, but it is not required. October 18th- Seek the Unknown at Bull Run with Suzanne Sorrell, a real life ghostbuster! Suzanne will bring ghost hunting equipment and her paranormal experience to help us search for the spirits that might haunt our building. Ghoulish snacks will be provided. For middle and high school students. Registration is required. 7-9pm

Tuesday, October 8th
Tonight, Prince William Hospital (Novant Health) will offer the first of four Ladies' Nights for October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month).  Just so ya know, I'm a little jealous that breast cancer gets pink ribbons, shopping nights, and giveaways.  Brain Cancer is grey, people.  Nobody wants grey yogurt.

But, I digress.


Oct. 8 and 17 • 6 to 9 p.m. Novant Health Prince William Medical Center 8700 Sudley Road, Manassas or Oct. 23 and 28 • 6 to 9 p.m. Novant Health Imaging – Heathcote 15195 Heathcote Blvd., Ste. 110, Haymarket.  These evenings will include shopping, giveaways, medical talks, chair massages, swag bags, and more. Free.

Kids off at school today? Calling all moms! Leesylvania State Park invites you to take a break from your busy schedule to enjoy refreshments and socializing. Our monthly meet-ups will also feature different activities for you to try while relaxing.
Let nature ignite your imagination!  We'll introduce you to a new way to interact with nature by making fairy houses out of natural materials.  Can you find the fairies in the forest?

Saturday, October 12th
From 9am-3pm join the Marine Corps Museum for family day Saturday, October 12 Family Day — Rappahannock Trains Join us and enjoy an impressive model train display in our Leatherneck Gallery.

Talk of the Town Sports & Events along with Clean Music Movements Presents, "Stop The Bullying" concert on October 12, 2013 at Northern Virginia Community College, Woodbridge Campus.
