Business Review: Jamberry Nails

Okay.  Let's start with the basics.  I am admittedly an idiot at nail maintenance.  If I had the money, I would go and have acrylic pink and white nails put on all the time by some nice professional at a salon so that my nails looked good and I didn't have to fuss with them.  I am skilled in cutting without taking off skin and in applying clear polish.  You wanna see what happens when I try to do cute?

Bam.  That just happened. I call this application "4th of July Glitter Seizure"

Right.  Obviously nails aren't my forte.  So, I was excited when Jennifer Dunkel wanted to send me some Jamberry Nail Shields to try.  I've seen these on friends who have polish and style before, and I was excited to join the club.

Let's pause for a moment for me to tell you that they're still on (almost a week later) and they do not chip, because they're not polish, which is great. (They're vinyl) Typically when I get a manicure in a salon, I've lost at least some of the polish by day 2.  So, once you get these suckers on they're fantastic.

Unfortunately, and I'm going to blame this on my lack of skill, I really didn't care for the process, even though the results were great.  We got pink glitter shields to use on my daughter and peacock ones for me, although I ended up in pink glitter, too.  We followed the directions carefully:
It took me a while, and I struggled with heating the shields without over-heating my fingers, although I have to say that when you get through the application process (or if you're less incapable than me and have no issues), your nails do look really good.  I think that when I try the peacock ones I'll do one nail (maybe my ring finger) and then paint the other ones in a coordinating color.  Again, this is probably mostly my own lack of still that made application such a procedure, but they did turn out really cute, I think.

If you like cute nails, but your polish chips a lot, or if you'd like fun colors/designs that would be practically impossible to create on your own:

Then Jamberry Nails has options for you. Colors range from exotic to floral to plain (they do have a line that includes plain colors, too), and there is also a children's line that comes with 2 mix and match prints for little girls.  Sheets are $15 and are supposed to be able to complete 2-3 manicures, with trimming of larger pieces.

You can order your nail shields from Jennifer by visiting her website, or by hitting her up on Facebook. One of my friends told me she'll never forgive me for putting this out right before Halloween because now she wants all of the fun holiday shapes she could never paint on herself:

Jennifer is giving away 2 free sheets of nail shields to a PwcMoms.com reader!! Contest closes September 30th at midnight.  Enter by leaving a comment with which two prints you'd like to win (and be sure to be specific!!) Thanks for sharing, Jennifer!

Review: Gigi Hill Purses

Happy Wednesday, people!! Today in the mail I got the most fantastic review- a bag from Gigi Hill.  This new company was founded by two moms at a soccer game, and I've gotta say, they did a good job! I selected the "Ingrid" bag in Athena Bronze for myself (and for a lucky winner, too!! Details on that at the end of the post!):
When the bag came, I was actually shocked by its size! it's much bigger than it looks online, which is FANTASTIC for me! I can fit my laptop (it's a Mac Book Pro), several school books, and a couple of snacks in this sucker, and since we're always on the go- that's exactly what I need.  I'm not an authority on accessories, though, so I had to call in PwcGrandma on this one.  She was a stay at home mother to me and my brother for our entire childhoods and sacrificed a lot to be able to be home.  That meant that after she went back to work, she swore with God as her witness that she would never go without matching shoes and purses again, and is now busily filling our childhood bedrooms with accessory walls that would make Tim Gunn jealous.

I love her.

Anyway- PwcGrandma loves this purse, and she's an authority.  Here's why:
First- they laminated the inside of the bag.  Brilliant!  When your lipgloss leaks or your child's cup tips over, your bag will not be ruined.  She brings up a good point because I actually had that happen to the only leather purse I've ever owned.

Second- pockets, pockets, pockets!  PwcGrandma is one of these people:
So it's really important that everything has a place to go so that it can be IN ITS PLACE WHERE IT BELONGS!! This bag has got pockets like you wouldn't believe.  One front and one back section, with the middle section including 2 built in pen or lipgloss holders, three clear pockets, and a zippered pocket.  Organizational chart optional. ;)
Finally, there's the details.  From a key holder so that your keys don't sink to the bottom of your bag to a locking front clasp so that you don't have your purse popping open when you don't want it to, the details on this bag are adorable! Even the zipper pulls are heart-shaped.  The quote on the pocket is a nice touch, too.
Moment of honesty- it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to get this sucker open.  I turned the key and turned the key and tried pushing and pulling, and then my daughter walked in and pulled the button down.  She's 4.  She got the grandma accessorizing gene, though.

Details on the upcoming Gigi Hill Event follow.  Giveaway details are under that!

Pack Walk

National Event to Support the Cesar Millan Foundation to Culminate in Washington, D.C. on September 29

LOS ANGELES, CA – June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Warner Bros. Consumer Products, internationally renowned dog behavior expert and animal activist Cesar Millan, and Scooby-Doo have partnered again for the Second Annual National Family Pack Walk on September 29 in Washington, D.C. What began as a regional event in Los Angeles in 2011 has expanded to include a series of local Pack Walks around the country between September 24 – 30, led by North Shore Animal League America national shelter partners and Mutt-i-grees Curriculum schools. The movement culminates in Washington D.C. with the large-scale National Family Pack Walk taking place on the National Mall.
The series of community Pack Walks coupled with the National Family Pack Walk, known as the One Million Paw March, will unite pack families from all walks of life in support of the primary causes of the Cesar Millan Foundation. The Cesar Millan Foundation is dedicated to promoting animal welfare by supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of abused and abandoned dogs and by delivering community humane education programs, including the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum.
“The Pack Walk is a movement towards reconnecting ourselves with our dogs and our community. By stepping up as a pack leader, it’s more than just walking a dog,” said Millan. “We need to be walking in one direction, toward a common outcome, helping one another. I want this to be a symbolic event for the community as a goal towards building healthy relationships with their dogs and each other.”
The national movement will conclude in Washington, D.C. with a 1.5 mile Pack Walk around the National Mall, led by Cesar Millan and Scooby-Doo, followed by an afternoon of Scooby-themed activities from numerous Warner Bros. partners, licensees and charitable sponsors. A fun, interactive environment for families and dog enthusiasts, the national event as well as all local events will be open to the public.
“We are very excited to bring Scooby and Cesar together again as we expand our partnership to offer fans and dog-lovers around the country an even bigger and better event with our second annual National Family Pack Walk movement,” said Brad Globe, president, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “Scooby-Doo is a beloved icon for fans and families everywhere, and Cesar’s dedication to creating a balanced and enhanced relationship between owners and their dogs makes for a natural collaboration on these exciting and entertaining events that raise awareness and money for a great cause nationwide.”
The National Pack Walk and regional Pack Walks are part of a four-year alliance between Scooby-Doo and Cesar Millan and are made possible with national support from the following partners:
  • Cesar Millan Foundation: Created by animal activist and world-renowned animal behaviorist, Cesar Millan, the Foundation strives to promote animal welfare by supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of abused and abandoned dogs, while establishing community humane education programs, such as the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum.
  • The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum: As the leading educational program for the Cesar Millan Foundation, the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum – developed in collaboration with Yale University of the 21st Century and North Shore Animal League America and funded by the Millan Foundation, offers an innovative in-school curriculum that builds on children’s affinity for animals and highlights the unique characteristics and desirability of Mutt-i-grees®, or shelter dogs. The curriculum teaches social, emotional and instinctual skills and is unique in its bridging of humane education and the emerging field of Social and Emotional Learning in more than 1,200 participating schools.
  • North Shore Animal League America: As the primary shelter-support arm of the Cesar Millan Foundation and the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, Animal League America will organize regional shelter Pack Walks as well as participate in the Washington D.C. event. Since its inception, Animal League America has saved over one million animals, and each year continues to rescue, nurture and adopt 20,000 pets into happy and loving homes. As an extension of Scooby-Doo’s long-standing partnership with the Cesar Millan Foundation, the beloved canine icon was named as the official Pet Ambassador for Animal League America, joining their Pet Adopt-A-Thon® efforts last month.
Proceeds from all National Family Pack Walk events throughout the country will be donated to the Millan Foundation. Visit www.cesarsway.com/packwalk to sign-up for the D.C. or regional Pack Walks, obtain virtual Pack Walk tools and find out more information on the movement in Washington, D.C. Featured Organization Friday: Hope For Julianna

Meet Julianna:
How freaking adorable is she??

Unfortuantely, though, Julianna, in addition to having that adorable face, also has childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.  If you've ever had a child who's needed any type of medical treatment, you know how quickly costs add up.  For a child with a serious illness, these costs are obviously astronomical.

Her family is holding a car wash this Saturday Sept. 22, to raise funds for Julianna’s treatment.

They write on their website:
If you do not have any plans and are in the area, please consider helping us out. We could really use some extra manpower and support. Or if you would like to stop by to get your car washed, that would be great, too! Please contact me if you are able to grab a sponge and spend a few hours with us.

Urban Evolution

You need to shake up your child's monotonous perspective on staying fit with some exercise, but you don't want to make them feel like a hamster in a wheel on a treadmill or pass the ball around for 3 hours at a stretch! Check out Parkour classes at Urban Evolution for PwcMoms fans! Pay $100 for 10 visits to the gym (a 10-visit "punchcard"), and change how they look at the world forever! (This is a special savings for PwcMoms.com readers.)

Classes are available for kids ages 6 to 14, with dedicated "homeschool only" classes for kids ages 9-11 on Wednesdays at 1pm, and more classes for other age groups to come as we grow the program! Here's a schedule for all the kid classes that are currently being offered at Urban Evolution Manassas.

Urban Evolution (or "Urban Evo" for short) has locations in Alexandria and Manassas and different age and skill level options each week, allowing boys and girls throughout Northern Virginia to learn Parkour. Cross off the food pellets and wood chips from your grocery list, because thanks to Urban Evolution, you can graduate your child from hamster to hall of famer. It's the perfect activity to grab the interest of kids who might not gravitate to team sports or whose idea of fitness is a PlayStation controller thumb workout...but it can be demanding enough for professional football players! It's a great way to help kids change their ideas about fitness while helping them build self-esteem and encouraging them to work hard.

So you’ve heard of parkour before, and maybe you’ve even seen some pictures or videos labeled as parkour, but what exactly is parkour?

It's not strictly defined by any particular workout or conditioning regiment. It’s more about finding the way to keep improving and eventually reach your greatest physical potential. And that’s what makes it so great! Your only opponent here is yourself. Your competition is you (at least officially speaking). So it does have its philosophical side, but here at Urban Evolution, we’ve come up a variety of ways to challenge your kids and hone their skills in a safe and fun environment!

Urban Evolution offers many other classes as well. After some training, you'll be able to check out more advanced training in parkour. We bring discipline and conditioning together with creative obstacle courses to challenge your mental and physical abilities. Generally, our high teacher-to-student ratio allows us to address questions and work through challenges for kids of all types on an individual basis.

This is a sponsored post from Urban Evolution.  As with any physical activity, please note you participate at your own discretion.  PwcMoms is not responsible for children's participation in any activity listed.

Max Muscle Update

So as part of this process with Max Muscle, a large part of my work has been cleaning up my act where eating is concerned, which means making changes in how frequently I eat and what I choose to chomp on.

There've been some winners and some losers in this process.  I thought I'd share and see if you all have any input as to what works for you when it comes to eating healthy.

Suggested Food:  Egg Whites
Losing: Plain Egg Whites

Winning!: Egg whites are actually not that bad! However, I need my food to taste like something, and I've found that 1 tablespoon of hot salsa, a few shakes of Tabasco Sauce, or 1 tablespoon of feta cheese and some spinach if you're trying to be fancy, makes them amazing.  I usually go for the Tabasco.  Buying them pre-separated makes using them a lot easier, too.
Suggested Food: Protein Bars
Losing: Luna Protein Bars in Peanut Butter.  Y'all.  I am a fat girl.  I love food, and I love peanut butter.  I couldn't get one bite of this sucker down. Not One.  I think that's funny because the Luna White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies Bars are amazing.
Winning!: 1/2 of a Cliff Builder Bar in Chocolate is amazing, as is any variety of Kind Bar I've ever had.  They sell the Kind Bars in Max Muscle, too, although they're not really high in protein but they have a lot of healthy fats.  Max Muscle also has Power Crunch bars, if you can get them- they're frequently gone because they're so popular. They taste like wafer cookies, if you used to eat those as a kid. Yum :)

Suggested Food: Max Muscle Protein Shakes
Winning: Chocolate IsoMax Powder.  It tastes like coconut to me when mixed with almond milk (not like chocolate), but it's pleasant.

Winning!: Max Muscle Triple Whey in Chocolate.  I like Chocolate, don't judge me.  This stuff seriously does not taste like protein powder.  It tastes like Nestle Quick.  The only reason I didn't buy this was because I'm slightly dairy sensitive and I wanted the isolate.  I've come to love this as a quick breakfast.  Before starting this process I always skipped breakfast and now I'm actually hungry in the morning if I do that, but with kids and commitments speed is king. When you go in to Max Muscle, they'll actually do a tasting for you, just like a winery but proteiny-er.  Which is totally a word.
Suggested Food: Meat.
Losing: I don't really love meat.  I eat it, but I don't love it.  When I eat it, at least in the past, I've typically used it as a conduit for getting more sauce.  Bread works equally as well.  I do not love meat without sauce. No sauce is a fail.

Winning!: I also love Middle Eastern food, though, and they've got the solution.  Greek Yogurt is a happy food on my plan, and if you put three crushed garlic cloves into a large container of low fat or fat free Greek Yogurt overnight, you have made sauce! Delicious, creamy, garlic sauce! Win.  Garlic, cilantro, parsley, jalepeno and red wine vinegar pureed in the food processor also works.  (Do you see a theme here with spicy things?)

What helps you keep your diet healthy? Do you need some tips, too? (Or maybe you already have the fitness thing down? That's cool, too!) Come out and join me for our next Mommies Night Out at Max Muscle! Corry, who as I've mentioned a few times has been amazing, is promising that cupcakes and wine go with losing weight, and I'm willing to buy what she's selling ;)

We'll have vendors and raffles (if you're interested in coming, let me know) and some great time together! If you're planning to join us, please RSVP to my email so we know who to expect.  Newbies to fitness, new moms (especially new moms!) and fitness divas are all welcome!

Giveaway: Angel Murphy Photography

A few days ago, my middle child had to do a presentation about his mom.  He really wanted to take in a picture of the two of us, so I started searching.  We have some adorable pictures of me and my baby boy when he was first born....when he was six months old....annnnd.....

Yeah, epic mom fail, I have no other pictures of just the two of us.  Lots of me and the boys or me and the younger two or me and all the kids, but not just the two of us.  That was so sad to me especially since my middle guy is probably the most loving and mommy-adoring child on earth.  Luckily, though, I had an upcoming photographer preview, and when we met up with Angel of Angel Murphy Photography, she made sure to get a picture of me and my sweet little guy, by ourselves.   He enjoyed the special attention :)
Hooray!!

What I love about Angel's style of photography is that she does "lifestyle" pictures.  That means that while she'll do some mild posing (especially if you need a picture of you with your middle child!) what she really does is turn your family loose and catch them in the act.  We had a great time playing at Leesylvania State Park, and it just happened that we had our own personal paparazzo.  What's so precious about lifestyle photography is it catches who your child is- not just a perfect moment. Angel is very sweet and easy to work with, and since she also has two little ones, she's patient with kids' moods and whims.

Here are a few of my favorites from the Angel Murphy Photography Facebook Page:
If I got to name this picture, I would call it "Divatude".  I'm not sure if that's a word, but if it's not, it should be!
I love everything about this, including the yellow around her mouth.  What a happy joyful childhood moment!
Some day in the future, this will be me.  I hope my boys are this sweet to me.

Angel Murphy Photography is currently offering Halloween Mini Sessions in the Woodbridge, Virginia area.  You can purchase your spot for a Halloween mini by getting in touch with her now, but we've also got a mini session to give away! (If you book a Halloween Mini, you're also entered to win a Christmas Mini).

Halloween/Fall is a great time to get a few pictures done! They're back in plenty of time for Christmas Cards, or they make a great way to remember those adorable costumes that are going to be in a ball at the back of the closet on November 1st. Just saying.

Enter using the Rafflecopter below! Contest closes September 21st at midnight.
